The step from avian flu to human flu has not happened yet. The people who have so far caught it and died from it have been in constant contact with birds. The authorities are mostly looking for the first case where avain flu gets into someone with human flu. The avian strain is likely to mutate to a human form if this happens.
I have a commercial aviary right behind me where I live, and I'm still alive (although some would say otherwise).
