You've piqued my curiosity though. I was involved in some business conversations about foreign investments in South American companies many years ago - primarily establishing companies to manufacture products and export to the U.S.
The plan was scrapped due to the corruption, bribery, high inflation rate risk, and political instability (read: nationalization of private assets).

There really are opportunities if you have people to help you navigate the system. I recommend only dealing with attorneys that practice in your host country and the US.
I think reits are a good way to go down there but you do have to understand that their land laws are based on the Napoleonic Code and possession has a whole different legal meaning.
