Sounds like my in-laws, who are devout Russian Orthodox....
The Russian Orthodox believers themselves are more lenient towards Protestant denominations than Catholicism. Whether it is from the ancient schism and iconoclastic controversy, I do not know. I just know that they are usually very nice to me, except when I celebrate the "wrong" Easter.
The politics involved, it does come over to the Russian Orthodox believers here. But I try to be patient with my in-laws and their congregation, as they are with me. My husband got over me being a Protestant......
