Today is World Diabetes Day
People all over the world are being reminded today of Diabetes. WHO in association with International Diabetes Federation have declared 14 November 2004 as World Diabetes Day. The theme this year is "Fight Obesity: Prevent Diabetes".
In India, Government has inserted big advertisements in newspapers to create aweareness about Diabetes. There are 32 million diabetes in India and it is more common inurban areas. WHO estimates that the number will go up to 80 million in 2030. Not a happy scenerio. Symptoms of diabetes: Excessive thirst; Excessive urination; Unexplained weight loss; Excessive hunger. Tests for diabetes: Blood glucose; Urine glucose. Risk factors for diabetes: Obesity and overweight; Sedentary life style; Stress; Smoking. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and drugs. Its complications can be prevented through treatment. Diabetes can be prevented by Yoga; Stress management; Regular physical excercise; Control of obesity by balanced and healthy diet; Introducing good eating habits in childhood. In India ICMR has shown effectiveness of alternate medicine in controlling diabetes - Vijayser (Pterocarpus marsupium); Jamun (Eugenia jambolana); Methi (Fenugreek). One thing which has been missing and is still missing from all awareness campaigns is whether Diabetes can only be treated or can also be cured. People should be told about it. Wishing for a diabetes-less tomorrow.

Re: Today is World Diabetes Day
Diabetes is a fear of mine due to it being on my mothers side of the family.
Prevention magazine reported that the spice cinnamon is benificial to people with Diabetes. Did a search to make sure I was spelling it and a site selling the stuff in pill form states "Recent studies have determined that consuming as little as one-half teaspoon of Cinnamon each day may reduce blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels by as much as 20% in Type II diabetes patients who are not taking insulin" http://www.cinnamonpills.com/ have never visited this site before today so I have no idea how reliable it is but Prevention magizine is generally a good sorce of information. One half tea spoon seems like quite a bit of cinnamon to me but I will definatly increase my intake. __________________ Lotto http://www.flalottomagic.net/cgi-loc...gi?welcome-344 Magic Last edited by LottomagicZ4941; 11-20-2004 at 04:11 AM. Taking pills or any other medicine to reduce weight is not advisable. I am not suffering from obesity. But I take morning walk, do some yoga and I find the result very encouraging. My wasteline has reduced and weight is also decreasing steadily. I don't take sweets and fatty foods. And that is all.
