And, out of seemingly nowhere, I once read that there are three levels of morality.

The first level is obedience from fear. Tales of hell and judgment day certainly contribute to this fear.

The second level is obedience from duty. It's a higher elevation than a fear-based life, but requires a lot of work to stifle baser emotions.

The third and highest level is obedience from love.

Judgement day was an idea thought up by the early church to strike fear into the masses, most of the Bible was pu together at the council of Nicea by the emperor Constantine and the leading members of the church at the time, the idea was to decide whether or not Christ was consubstantial with God or not. Of course the church leaders chose the option which gave them the most power, i.e. Christ being consubstantial with God.

The relevance of this is that this was when the church became an essentially political entity instead of merely a religeous one, Judgement Day is one of the ways of controlling people through religeon that the church thought up.

All religions are essentially a way of controlling the masses, thus political. The best quote I have seen in 2004 has been:
