Bush Wants To Be Your Shrink

Now Bush wants to test every American for mental illness--including you! And guess who will create the tests?

Next month, President Bush plans to unveil a broad new mental health plan called the “New Freedom Initiative.” Never mind that it couldn’t have less to do with freedom; if you’re a thinking American, this initiative should scare the hell out of you.

The New Freedom Initiative proposes to screen every American, including you, for mental illness. To this end, the president established a New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, to study the nation’s mental health delivery service and make a report. It’s interesting to note that many on the staff appointed to the Commission have served on the advisory boards of some of the nation’s largest drug companies

Is this really a true article? It seems so far out there that maybe I should post this in the paranormal area. Comments?

Re: Bush Wants To Be Your Shrink

Bush is just perpetuating an agenda created by the mental health police and the pharmaceutical companies. It's been around for quite some time resulting in unqualified paraprofessionals and social workers misdiagnosing ADHD and other mental disorders in millions of children and referring them to busy shrinks for a quick prescription. Many of those children are now suffering from the ill effects of wrongly prescribed pharmaceuticals which include Ritalin, SSRIs like Paxil and Prozac, and even powerful anti-psychotics like Haldol and Prolixin.

Many people in nursing homes are also victims of psychiatric assault and often have no friend or relative to advocate for them. They languish alone with tardive dyskenesia and untreated side effects from major tranquilizers.

Psychotropics are a valuable tool in the treatment of mental illness but when they are not correctly prescribed they can cause serious psychiatric disorders and even brain damage in some cases. Beware the brave new world of American psychiatry and report psychiatric abuse to your local or state board of medical practice.

Plazul,

I find your post scary but true. I'm disappointed that Pres. Bush is moving forward with this. Some of his decisions of late regarding industries that are known for having powerful PAC's are disturbing.

As a parent of several young children, I can tell you first hand how eager some of the teachers and principals at different public institutions are to diagnose children with ADHD and immediately recommend Ritalin. (I guess I'm really referring to my sphere of knowledge: California.)

It's a cop-out. It's an easy fix for them. The school district psychiatrists just roll along with the recommendations.

For those skeptics of you. Let me ask you this: Have you been to lunch break at your local public elementary school lately? Check it out sometime. Look and see how many children are either brought to the office or to a section of their eating area to be dispensed their meds. (No, not their allergy medicines, Ibuprofin, or antibiotics.) One school has a self-proclaimed: Ritalin Room.

I wonder how mankind got along without it for all these years?

There's no doubt that many children suffer from psychiatric illness, including depression, but it really takes a child psychiatrist with advanced training in pharmacology to get it right in prescribing for children. For a period of time in In our school district 20% of the elementary school children were on Ritalin causing a major investigation.

Real ADHD isn't as common as the popular media has made it out to be but over zealous school counselors buy into the hype and make unqualified diagnoses. Normal children have had to suffer something akin to amphetamine psychosis before Ritalin was discontinued. What a shame. Just because a child has an active imagination is no reason to jump the gun on ADHD.

Non addictive Straterra may take the place of Ritalin in many instances but any drug that's strong enough to help you is strong enough to hurt you so I would prefer trying psycho therapy with young children.

And as far as national psych evals are concerned, I would fight it to my last breath.

Cool Re: Bush Wants To Be Your Shrink

Most great free nations survive 200 years, slavery, to great courage, to freedom to slavery, complacency greed and thirst for power, will take us back to slavery. Many folks strive for World Governance I definitely do not. Without us third world nations will not fight to be like us. World governance is good for the sale of goods and social states not for democracies. We are past due. Keep stroking.

Where do you think we are now in the cycle of things? I guess the answer would be, "on the way down"?
