And let me elaborate a little for those reading these posts with a jaundiced eye.

I really don't now how to address the whole "conspiracy theory coverup" surrounding this topic.

What I do know, on a tactical level, is that when our fine men and women in the U.S. Military did encounter these episodes, it was known that they should not discuss what happened.

In the new age of weapon recording systems, these episodes would always be recorded - only to have the cassettes and cartridges removed upon arriving back at the base. In addition, this was the *only time that the returning crew was not required to file a flight / mission report.

I have heard that in Portugal the president acknowledged their existence, due to the widespead sighting, and also in Mexico.
Do notice that countrie less concerned with power and war, do not try to cover up facts and events.

My first thought concerning that is that since Roswell and the first mayor cover up, they fell into it and haven't backed up yet. Everyone else seems
to accept it and live with it.

Are the superpowers afraid to acknowlege that there is something there they can't explain? More powerful than the U.S.?

There are various reasons,but the ones I can think of right now that frightens
a society too proud of itself and aiming at world control is, not being able to accept that:

#1. There is much greater power one in control.
#2. An extremely far advanced technology in someone else's hands
#3. We have been watched far longer that someone can imagine.
(or someone else has been doing the spying)
#4. We are not the highest level of evolution
#5. Our space program is ludicrous
#6. If we accept that, then what else is impossible?
#7.That we are as vulnerable as chickens.

I think those reasons are valid.

A Government official once stated that the official recognition of UFO's would be a national security risk. Many of the points below were used as rationalization. The other thing they were worried about was loss of civilian control due to lack of "authoritarian power".
