Designer drugs such as MDA (Ecstasy) first appeared in the early Seventies. For some designers the objective was to design recreational drugs that were safe and had few side effects but counterfeiting and cutting the drugs with other substances (including poison) soon made the substances unreliable.

Now, DEA and other law enforcement agencies are worried about the rise of drug recipes and drug producing chemicals and equipment sold on the Internet.

Methamphetamine is very inexpensive to make but it's also quite hazardous because it involves highly toxic and explosive chemicals but that has not deterred bootleggers attracted by high profit margins. While meth abuse continues to increase exponentially other more sophisticated drug users are turning to home made designer drugs that they consider to be safer and more rewarding than amphetamine and other hard street drugs. Better living through chemistry has taken on a whole new meaning.

There are few statistics available on adverse reactions to home made substances such as some benzodiazapine and hallucigen compounds but DEA is devoting more resources to stemming the flow of chemicals that are used to create the most popular abused substances. But, because of the First Amendment, there's little they can do to censor instructions for drug manufacturing available on the Internet.

So, if your kid suddenly seems interested in chemistry be sure it's just academic curiosity.
