Steroids

As I have said before I am a bit of an oddity, a Brit baseball fan, as such I was glued to FOX last night to watch the hearings on steroid use, wow.
Mark McGuire !!!!!!!
I dont see very much baseball over here and no indepth coverage just game highlights so I had not seen his change in physique until Fox put up a picture taken when he was last playing. the difference was startling.

First offhe gets up there in tears and stating how much he wants to help the kids, the he takes the 5th, even when directly questioned as to whether he had taken steroids he refused to answer.

Would you like someone to lecture kids whose answers could be construed to be less than frank!! help me out here what did he have to lose ? He has retired has he not, he is probably not poor so why could he not strike a blow for decency and just flat out say what he had done.

Whether true or not Sosa, Schilling et al have denied steroid use.

Something else I did not understand, some of the talking heads on Fox were saying that congress should not be allowed to do this because baseball is protected by the "Anti Trust" laws, what is this?

Anyway in conclusion I was absolutely transfixed for hours and I would guess Mr Maguire's pr people have a little damage limitation to do.

I was also glued to the TV during the hearings. And I think I can help you out in trying to understand Big Mac's position on pleading the 5th.

I DO NOT agree with him in any way by electing to use this protection right. By him NOT answering any questions, gives him a GUILTY verdict in the court of the general public. He is a beloved player in the eyes of so many fans and he let so many down by doing this. He and Sosa brought many fans back to the game. He said he is pleading the 5th on "advice by his attorney/" Id say get new legal representation!!! Youre exactly right when you say above:

"he gets up there in tears and stating how much he wants to help the kids, then he takes the 5th, even when directly questioned as to whether he had taken steroids he refused to answer."

In my honest opinion, He doesnt want to answer the questions because he DID use some kind of substance. Did you see Palmerio look straight into the camera and point and say "I have never taken any kind of steroids, Jose Canseco's allegations are false and he is a discrace, trying to make money on a book" He didnt say those exact words, but it was somthing to that extent. Every other player on that board denied using, so why didnt Big Mac? Does he have somthing to hide? I believe so. I dont understand why his attorney would tell him to plead the fifth if he didnt have anything to hide? Big Mac commented on that question asked by a congressman. Mac said, somthing like, It is my right and under my leagal advice, it has been stated in my best interest not to answer any questions reguarding your questioning. Only to make my statement and blah blah blah... He basically said, by naming people and talking about the matter it will tarnish my career and ...... Well, to late Big Mac!! Not answering simple questions has done that for you. I think the reason why you were crying was because you were nervous and have a big secret to hide. Big Mac PR will have a big job ahead of them.

Now to help answer the question:
"Something else I did not understand, some of the talking heads on Fox were saying that congress should not be allowed to do this because baseball is protected by the "Anti Trust" laws, what is this?"

Im not sure exactly how to answer this question but here is a link that has some Q&A on anti-trust laws in baseball. Very good stuff.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/2001/1205/1290707.html

Did you get a chance to watch the questioning of Bud Selig, Rob Manfred, Donald Fehr and the other few? That's what I was most interested in. Congress made some very significant arguments in the draft or the new testing policy. From what they read off of it, the draft was a disappointing policy. They pointed out dratfing errors, questioned the new policy and made it look like a waste of time. And I have to agree from what they read, it did seem a little juvenile. I emailed one of the congressmen that was there and asked for a copy of it. I hope I get one. Ill let you know if I do.

Re: Steroids

No I did not get a chance to see the others, it was already 3.0am here when I finished watching not so big Mac finish his whitewash, I was also impressed by Palmerio and his no nonsense stance.

Unfortunately we get very little coverage here but I will keep watching, and cheering the White Sox on

Thankyou for the anti trust info, interesting reading.

Re: Steroids

Big Mac was eaten up by congress and is now a Jr. Bacon CB from Wendys! If you get on:

www.espn.com

You can read about what was said when Selig and his MLB "people" were questioned about and how they did too.

Re: Steroids

I saw parts of the hearing and you know what? Honestly Mark should have just gone out and admitted it in front of Congress because everybody knew he used to take muscle enhancing steriod stuff. A few years ago, he admitted that he stopped taking Creatin. And you know what, a lot of people have forgotten about it. I think a lot of people would have eventually forgiven him if he had admitted it. The angry first reaction would have died down after awhile. He made things a lot worse. Sosa did too by "forgetting" that he spoke English. He convieniently had to use a translator when all of the "important" questions came up. It's a shame that they have to lie. Then again they are big shot celebrities that think they can get away with everything. Well, they are wrong.
