DHS proposes national drivers license

The Department of Homeland Security is floating the idea of a national drivers license. Most of the 911 terrorists had fraudulent licenses obtained through the Internet and elsewhere.

Currently, it's possible to lose your license in one state and obtain a new one in another. Also, state DMV's aren't very well connected so criminals with warrants from out of state sometimes slip away after a license check. And there's a huge problem with counterfeit licenses which enable illegals to get employment and blend into society.

Would you object to a national drivers license? I have no problem with the proposal because we already have federal Social Security cards. It would simply law enforcement and make it more effective.

But it must be limited to a drivers license and not expaned to contain a personal data bases.

This to me is akin to having "papers".

Don't like it. Are they worried about counterfeiting? Still can be done with a national card.

If they want all American citizens to carry proof of identity papers, then they should just come out and say it. I guess we'll have to click our heels and shout: "Heil ****" as well.

This isn't Nazi Germany. I'm sick and tired of the Government over-reaching its bounds.

Well, passports are kind of like that. It's actually the best form of I.D you can have and they are going high tech now.

I know what you mean though. If national drivers licenses go the way of Social Security cards which said right on the card, not to be used for identification purposes, then we'd be in for trouble. Or, if they expand the type of data that you must have on your license.

In theory, it doesn't make any difference to me if a state or federal government issues my drivers license.
