Well, tomorrow (2 May) is, in Great Britain and possibly elsewhere (not too sure who gets it and who doesn`t, but don`t think America does -sorry!) a BANK HOLIDAY (public holiday to those from elsewhere who don`t know the custom)! Just to wish you all a great happy bank holiday if you`re getting one (and to apologise if you`re not), and to thank all the people who have to work on their holidays to help the public - ambulance, hospital, fire, police personnel, etc, taxman (okay, I`m joking about the taxman!) What is really strange is it actually looks like it might be good weather (it seldom is on bank holidays) so might be able to get down the beach and if I`m lucky have a swim. How are others going to enjoy the day off???! ![]() |

Re: Happy Bank Holiday!!!
Well, today was another BANK HOLIDAY in the UK - hope you all enjoyed it - and thanks to all the doctors, nurses, shop assistants, fire police and ambulance personnel etc who had to work anyway. Now it`s half-term so all you teachers and schoolkids enjoy it!

Re: Happy Bank Holiday!!!
What exactly is a bank holiday? Is it a public holiday or do only banks close?
In America on a public holiday only government offices, banks and other official offices close. Everything else remains open - in fact a public holiday is much busier in the stores than a regular day. For example - today was Memorial Day - a public holiday but in the middle of a barbeque our Amerigas cylinder ran out. A quick trip to the nearest Home Depot secured a replacement. Can you do that in UK? I heard that almost everything closes down there on a public holiday. Is that the case? As far as banks closing is concerned, Pennsylvania law prohibits banks to close on more than two consecutive days (including Sundays). And what is a 'half-term'? Do the schools close down in the middle of term?
