The New American Idol

It's easy to dismiss Arnold Schwarzenegger's election as a fluke, an "only in California" political anomaly fully explained by the words movie star and recall. After all, he wouldn't be governor if he weren't famous, rich, and married into political nobility. And even all that might not have been enough in a regular election; he benefited mightily from California's constitution encouraging voter temper tantrums, which in this case led to a lightning-fast campaign too short to dole out the usual damage. All in all, a rare combination of qualities and circumstances - and hardly the stuff of a national trend.

Re: The New American Idol

Here in Minnesota we had to live with four embarrrassing years of Jesse, the body, Ventura as governor. But at least he had a little political experience as a mayor before he got elected on the Idependents ticket by a disgruntled electorate that was tired of politics as usual.

I'm a native Californian and I think Arnold is a disaster for the state. At least Ronald reagan had an economics degree and there was some measure of logic, albeit conservative, to his fical policies. As an actor, Arnold has always operated on emotional appeal and that's how he's going to govern. He'll go wherever his show business instincts take him and he'll run the state right into the ground.

But I think california deserves it.

Hey, at least they didn't vote for Gary Coleman, or the former porn star.

As history shows, governors that were former tv stars don't do well working at the top of state government.
