More Israeli Espionage
Looks like Israel is up to it's old tricks again. A wire service article today reports that FBI is investigating one of Rumsfeld's staff who has allegedly been leaking highly classified intelligence on Iran to Israel. But this could develop into a wider story involving other classified information and possible Israeli manipulation of American defense and foreign policy including the false intelligence on Saddam's WMD program
Most nations take it for granted that their allies spy on them but Israel has been particularly aggressive in its clandestine operations probing everything from ultra-black submarine communications to nuclear secrets. Who can forget the Pollard affair which American intelligence officals described as a national security disaster or the Israeli assault on the American spy ship, Liberty, during the Six Day War. That incident, which Israel insists was a mistake, brought us to the brink of attacking Israel but the rescue planes were called back at the last minute by Secretary of Defense, Bob MacNamara. Much has been written about Israeli spying on America including accusations that Israel's Mossad traded American secrets to the old KGB in exchange for Russian intelligence on Israel's enemies in the Middle East. The crediblility of the sources for such stories varies but there can be no denying that Israel puts its interests well ahead of its relations with America. |

Plazul,
I thought you might be interested in this: This latest Israeli spy story makes no sense, and may be part of a set up to protect the real traitors. |

In looking at the way the Israelis ostensibly collected the information (email and dangerous meetings) you've got to wonder. However, considering the current leadership at DOD it's easy to understand why some staff might think that they could advance their careers by doing favors for Israel. I think the things of interest in the policy paper on Iran were probably criticisms of Israel, estimates of their nuclear weapons capacity, and strategies for containing them in the event of a war with Iran. That would be my guess. Sharon does not make American policy. But the Jewish vote is a force to be reckoned with and every administration does a toe dance on policy towards Israel. What makes this President different is that his religious faith colors his attitude towards Israel and he sees it as the center piece of God's plan for his coming kingdom on Earth. Sharon is not religious and I sense that he privately despises Christian Zionists and Christian fundamentalists. I think he resents their patronizing behavior and the fact that they believe that God put the fate of Israel in their hands and that they must protect Israel from itself. I don't doubt that Sharon would love to have a fly on the wall for Oval Office policy meetings on Israel |
