Where are the suicide bombers?

Twenty more deaths in Iraq yesterday from a suicide bombing and terrorists around the world seem to be going for maximum shock value but all is still quiet on the western front. Why?

I can see why terrorists who want to escape would take a long time to plan their strategy, and there would be some psychological value in that, but if they are perfectly willing to die in an attack they could have pulled off any number of car bombings and "suicide pack" attacks by now.

This leads me to believe they are plotting one massive coordinated attack, probably against a series of soft targets across America, as DHS has suggested. A chain reaction of deadly explosions in highly populated areas would cause immediate chaos with Americans not knowing whether to flee their locations or to stay put. The terrorists would probably follow their initial attack with warnings of other ones making the government seem impotent and leaving the public unsure of where to turn.

Such an assault would cause many more deaths than 9-11 and precipitate a major economic downturn but I'm inclined to think it will come *after* the election, not before it. Whoever is elected President will have to answer to an angry and fearful public and presidential appeals for calm and calls for vengeance wont cut it. I think the objective is to make the next President seem powerless and to generate public pressure to make changes in foreign policy towards Iraq, Iran, Israel, Afganistan, and Saudi Arabia.


Then again, I'm usually wrong so perhaps there's reason for optimism.
