Old Cons vs New
Some prominent American conservatives angry about Bush's deficit spending and preemptive war doctrine could be a force for Bush and the neo cons to reckon with in the months ahead. Pat Buchanan, for example, is a long time foe of Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and the neocon strategists at the Pentagon. Buchanan has wriiten a number of expose type white papers on Israeli influence in Washington and many of his caustic comments about AIPAC, PNAC, and other neocon orgs have evoked accusations (nothing new to Buchanan) of anti semitism.
Buchanan and other old line patriots may now be looking at Kerry as the lesser of the two evils as more revelations about Israeli manipulation of Pentagon and White House policies come to light. They are scornful of the PNAC vision of a new world order and they fear that Israel and its neocon allies will force further U.S. entanglement in the Middle East and cause serious economic and diplomatic turmoil for decades to come.
Indeed, if there's going to be an October surprise it might very well come from conservative Washington insiders. Stay tuned.
