Question A Foreign Wedding

The Boyfriend and I have been heavily thinking about getting married in Europe. Our thinking is that if we're going to elope, we want to do something once-in-a-lifetime instead of just going to Vegas like everyone else from Ohio. Obviously it's going to take a bit of planning, and we're going to have to get passports. Here are some of our questions:
Will foreign governments do marriages for travelling couples, or would we be better off trying to find a church? Our denomination is not represented in Europe.
Will there be something special we'll have to do in the way of paperwork/licenses so that it is recognized when we get back to the states?
Are some countries going to be easier to pull this off in than others? He really wants to go to Amsterdam, but we're open to any kind of excitement really.
Has anyone here done something like this?

It depends where abouts in Europe you are thinking about.
Here's a link i just Googled that has some posts from u.s citizens who have married in Europe.
It may give you some idea of what you have to do x

Good for you! Get your marriage license where you live now first. Whether or not you need one in the Netherlands I don't know, but things are very liberal there. You can get married in a Seventh-day Adventist church on a Sunday, when they aren't having a regular service. They don't marry Adventists to non-Adventists, but they usually gladly marry two non-Adventists. The following link should give you a list of SDA churches in the Netherlands

If you visit a country with a US military base, you might ask the chaplain to help out. They're very flexible helping those outside their specific denomination/synagogue/whatever, and maybe willing to help out. I could help you contact one if you decide to go that way.
