John Ashcroft and other political appointees at DOJ may be running interference at FBI over the investigation into possible Israeli espionage and alleged manipulation of intelligence to support the decision to invade Iraq. At least that's what DNC opposition research is claiming and already there is pressure from Ashcroft's office for FBI to downgrade espionage charges to mishandling of classified information. This brings into question whether the Inspector General at DOJ has any power over the Attorney General. Who would investigate the nation's chief law enforcement officer?

That is what the Fourth Branch is for so expect more leaks from FBI and Pentagon insiders about AGO attempts to launder the evidence and kibosh the two year investigation.

With Bush owning the national security issue nothing would please the dems more than revelations that rogue operatives at the Pentagon are cooking intelligence to further their geopolitical objectives and working with Mossad to manipulate White House military policy.

White House communication's knows the press smells blood on this issue and it will be up to them to devise a diversion to spin down the story through October. What that might be is anybody's guess.
