.50 caliber ban in, where else, california
From a list i'm subscribed to. The bill in question will ban bolt action, .50 caliber rifles, which are used in sporting competitions, and nowhere else (that is, they have never been used in crime, and have never been used by terrorists).Hi All,
Apologies if you have already responded to this, it is a lot more menacing that it seems to our future of firearms ownership, in California and across the US. It won't stop if they get this one through. Being a resident of California isn't an issue, just give your opinion and make it count. The Governor must have seen a lot of interest in the AB50, Anti-50 Caliber Bill, they have actually added it as a topic in the pull-down menu on Arnie's Site. Please make sure you pick the AB 50 subject in the "Please choose your subject" pull-down. [It is the first choice.] Please add your own comments , make sure you mention "VETO the Bill" and make sure you check the "Opposed" check box before you send it! http://www.govmail.ca.gov/ All help is appreciated, remember if they win the ban on bolt action rifles, they won't stop there! Feinstein has already planned on duplicating this Bill in Washington if it passes Arnies desk! Thanks in advance, Craig R |

Re: .50 caliber ban in, where else, california
i wrote the following to our governor.
i wrote about this last week, i doubt that my one little message here - that will never be read by the Governor - will make any difference. but it's an important issue. .50's have never been used in crime. they've never been used by terrorists. they pose no threat to the general peace. as we well know, highly focused terrorists can wreak havoc with *box cutters*. so banning these rifles on the basis of their being a potential terrorist threat is just absurd. they are no more a threat than ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel - what is necessary is evil intent, not the raw materials, or this particular rifle. mr. governor, i voted for you, based upon your generally centrist-but- leaning-to-the-right position. you've handled enough guns in your movie career to know that it's not the gun, it's the hand that weilds it that matters. since, i reiterate, these guns have never been used in crime, nor for terrorist purposes, then this bill will accomplish nothing if signed into law - besides denying those who are not the problem access to their sporting arm of choice. for the record, i don't own a .50 BMG. i can't afford one - neither can the nearby crack dealer. please veto this feel-good, do-nothing legislation. thank you. |

Re: .50 caliber ban in, where else, california
No kidding. I guess that doesn't surprise me for CA. .50 Caliber rifles are very popular in the traditional hunting states.
So, it looks like they are leaving alone the traditional .50 muzzleloaders? They are worried *just about the bolt action rifles? That doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense.

Really. Who uses this type of firearm in committing crimes? Maybe they fear its body armor piercing capability but that's not sufficient for a ban.

certainly they arent worried about the .50's piercing body armour however they do fear its impact much as they do the hunting big bore munitions ie .600 nitro express.
its a funny thing though the police cry about a gun simply because it looks tough when its taken from the market the police are the first in line wanting them for their deparments. ![]() |

Anastrophe, it's a good letter....though a line or two about "girlie men legislators" wouldn't have hurt any.
I'm sure you already know this, but a written letter carries more weight than an email letter. I'd print it out, sign it, send one to Arnie, and one to your local representative, too. But, being me, then I'd get carried away, and I'd have blank form letters ready for people to sign while I sip coffee and attack shoppers at the local sporting goods stores urging them to sign. LOL.

.50 calibre may not have been used by terrorists in the USA but it has been in the UK. Private Stephen Restorick was shot on Feb 12th 1997 by an IRA sniper using what was later determined to be a Barrett 0.50 calibre rifle.
