Puppy Training!

As some of you know my husband & I got a puppy not too long ago. She is 10 weeks old. And a manger pain in the you know what! We have been trying to potty train her for the past 3 weeks! She does ok but she has her accidents. Last night we were on the bed watching T.V and she just came up on the bed and PEED on my comforter! She was out 15 minutes before that and went 2 times! It is really getting aggravating! Our basset hound (Saydee) that we have (now 4 years old) was so easy to potty train. Daphne (our puppy) is so darn stubborn and her going in the house is getting old. We have tried everything. She gets treats outside when she goes. We take her as soon as she wakes up, gets done eating drinking, being excited or scared (she hates the vaccum). We are moving into a new house in a few months. We had a 6000.00 upgrade on the carpet (didn't know we were getting a puppy) We don't want her to ruin our brand new carpet. Does anyone have any ideas? If she doesn't straighten out then she is going to be gone. I really don't want to get rid of her because she is so cute and we love her!

Re: Puppy Training!

My brother has a dog - who when she was a puppy was born with a bladder problem..She ended up having an infection like every month - and so she dribbled all the time..even now when she gets excited she pees......You sound like you are doing everything girl...Good Luck..IF it keeps up I would have her looked at - it maybe as simple as antibiotics..

Re: Puppy Training!

Yep vet trip first I think, then if that checks out ok, perhaps no water for the pup before bed. Yes potty training puppy is fun. We just kept putting ours out every hour and when he did his duty he got loads of praise and a treat, then we had to stop once trained cause the little begger would run out pee and run to the door expecting treats hehehehehe was cute but we jsut could not do treats all the time. He is well trained now, and if I am away for extended periods of time he holds it well. The other thing Susie, lock puppy up at nite in a kennel. The whimpering only lasts for like 3 nites. But traditionally most dogs will not have accidents in their beds.

Re: Puppy Training!

She was just in the Doc office on Saturday. They say she's fine and she's just a puppy! We take her every hour. She is such a pain! But I love her! She sleeps well all night long. She sleeps 6 hours at night without getting up one time. We have a crate for her but she HOWLS so loud. We'll get in trouble if she is heard! She IS a hound dog! They are very vocal sometimes. It is funny our basset just looks at her like SHUT UP already!

Re: Puppy Training!

Hey Susie...I doubt that there's much more frustrating than a puppy that won't take to house breaking. Are you going to crate train her? That's always the method I reccommend for new pups, and if you don't know the technique let me know, I'll walk you through it.

Re: Puppy Training!

The puppy isn't being stubborn. She's just a baby! That's what happens.
Their little systems aren't developed enough to do any better. You're lucky
you get 6 hours a night without her needing to go. As she gets older, if
you keep up with the training, it will get better.

Minks had a good suggestion, you can take her water up at night. But
even if she has just gone, you still can't trust her not to go again, especially
on a warm soft bed! She can't be allowed to roam around anywhere until
she's trustworthy.

You might try baby gates, do you have a place like kitchen or bathroom
floor without carpet? You could block her off in there or put her in her
crate when you can't be right there to watch her.

And get her some toys. It might help some with the howling if she can have
something to work on. Ever heard of a toy called a Kong? They are good
for puppies, you can fill them with peanut butter and they work a long
time getting it out.

Re: Puppy Training!

We tried to Crate her but she was so darn loud! Right now we are in an apartment and if anyone heres her and calls on us for her howling we will get in a lot of trouble. We aren't even supposed to have her in the apts. We already have 1 basset and 3 cats, now Daphne. When she was in her crate she howled and screamed like there was a murder going on in our apartment. Like I said she is fine through the night (6 hours) and I am home all day doing daycare so I am here to train her and correct her when she has done wrong. I am not sure what else to do for her. She has been letting me know when she has to go, She'd come to me and whine then run to the door. So she IS getting there.. it is just taking forever! Saydee was trained in a week!

Our dogs are completely spoiled. They have every toy that is on the petco shelf! Well almost. They have 3 huge toy boxes. Yeah they have 5 kongs but they don't like them all that much. We even have that Kong that has that special teething stuff in it! She has been in the kitchen with a babygate and she knocks it right down. When she is locked up she is like a bull! She rams it with her head!

Re: Puppy Training!

Well, Val and I can offer you tips and suggestions, but if your pup is spoiled and you're ok with that, there's not a lot that can be done. You have to get tough, or sacrifice your carpet.
Let me as you a couple things:
What kind of puppy is this?
What is her feeding schedule?
What type of food is she on?
Does she have access to water all the time?
Does she go for walks?
