Kartina Children's Dogs

It makes me sick to think what has happened and what continues to happen to people’s pets as a result of the way the Katrina evacuation was handled.

These 4 links will tell you the story better than I can.

They show no explicit graphic violence, but the nature of what one reads and hears (unweaned puppies, small dogs, leashed dogs, and a dogs next to their owners, all being shot) is very disturbing.

There is a movement to start a lobby effort to try to halt further shootings (of dogs that are not attacking anyone), and to have those who were doing the shooting prosecuted, fired, or at least moved to desk jobs.

Below I've summarized various fax numbers, email addresses, and webmail URLs that people have posted in other pet forums. Depending on how strongly you feel about what you've read and heard on the links above, or have already seen on TV and in the newspapers, I urge you to consider contacting some of the people below.

I suggest including the links at the bottom in your emails, if you decide to participate.

*** Remember that the school shootings were not the only shootings. ***

It usually takes a lot of determination to bring a police officer to justice.

One tactic to get colleagues off is to bring only the most serious charges or the charges with the least evidence, leaving out other charges. When the chosen charges can't be proved, the jury does not have the option to convict on the other charges that were not a part of the trial.

Another tactic is to fill the court room with fellow officers in a show of comradry.

The judge and the prosecutor in the trial know that the police are the only ones defending them from every crazy they ever convicted in their careers.

Those fellow officers who fear their own conduct is or might be questionable often pack the court room, and stare at the judge and prosecutor during the trail.

Finally, they can focus on criminal charges, where the standard of proof is “beyond reasonable doubt” instead of civil suits and firings, where the standard of proof is “preponderance of evidence” or “balance of probabilities”.

The only real hope for successful prosecution is if responsible police officers feel the need to shun and disown their criminal colleagues, as most of us civilians would shun and disown criminal colleagues.

Post Re: Kartina Children's Dogs

The poor dogs concerned need our help. Their owners are living with relatives, or in temporary housing. Their owners and the children will be home soon (some of the neighbors are already home), and the dogs just need to hang on for a couple of more weeks. Here is an email that I sent. It took me 15 minutes to email it to 11 officials. Please feel free to use it or borrow from it.

Subject: Please stop shooting dogs in Louisiana, and punish those officials who've engaged in needless pet slaughter

Most urgently, I and my family would like to urge you to use your office and influence to push for a 4 week moratorium on shooting stray dogs in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, except where those dogs leave their owner’s property and attack people without provocation.

In addition, I and my family would like to urge you push for an investigation into the needless shooting of dogs in Louisiana after the Hurricane Katrina.

The dogs that were needlessly shot were family pets, children’s pets. Some were small dogs, some were tied up, some were in buildings, some with their owners.

In some cases the distrust of government officials was so immense that owners left passionate notes pleading for their pets to not be shot, even though those pets were left inside shelters with food and water. And that immense distrust was proven well earned because those pets were shot.

Here are 4 of the best links on this subject. You will not see any graphic violence, but what you will hear and read will very probably disgust you.

Thank you for taking the time to follow the links. I’m sure you shared my pain and shame that our fellow human beings, trusted in positions of power, could act in such an inhuman un-American manner against the pets (in legal terms, “the private property”) of their fellow citizens.
