Huge Explosion, Mushroom Cloud Reported in North Korea

Interesting story. I was watching CNN and Fox this morning regarding this story. They are totally downplaying it on the major media outlets. Even South Korea is said to not be particularly upset by this. But...this is the first time they mentioned the size of the mushroom cloud. (Interesting that the TV talking heads completely left this information out of their reports.)

mushroom-shaped cloud about 3.5 to 4 kilometers (about 2-2 1/2 miles) in diameter
Wow. I would be concerned.

Hmmm.......

From: http://www.homelandsecurityus.com/

On September 9th, 2004 - the anniversary of the founding of North Korea, a large explosion and a mushroom cloud consistent with a nuclear detonation was observed in Kim Hyong Jik county, home to a a large missile arsenal and more than 1 million soldiers.

"We understand that a mushroom-shaped cloud about 3.5 to 4 kilometers (about 2-2 1/2 miles) in diameter was monitored during the explosion," stated an unidentified diplomatic source in Seoul, South Korea to the Yonhap News Agency. The source also stated that the explosion in Kim Hyong Jik county blasted a crater big enough to be noticed by a satellite.

The explosion was reportedly much larger than the April 22nd, 2004 explosion at a railway station in the North Korean town of Ryongchon that killed 160 people and injured an estimated 1,300. Developing.

Re: Huge Explosion, Mushroom Cloud Reported in North Korea

Powell has stressed the fact that the reports are inconclusive, he said they could be testing, or it could be maintenance at the site, while Rice has said that if North Korea was really testing, then that would only further isolate them from the international community, but then again does North Korea really care?

Anyone see Meet the Press this morning? Madeline Albright was talking about this.

Phew. I watched Madeline Albright. She really raised my blood pressure. She completely fobbed off any culpability about her responsibility during her "reign". See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.

By the way - I just saw this at Bloomberg:

North Korea Allows Explosion Site to Be Visited by Diplomats

Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Diplomats from countries including the U.K. will visit North Korea starting tomorrow to view the site of an explosion that last week prompted speculation of a nuclear test, a spokeswoman for the U.K.'s Foreign Office said.

Thursday's explosion was caused by the deliberate demolition of a mountain as part of a hydroelectric project and was not a nuclear test, the spokeswoman said by phone from London, citing information the government received from North Korea in response to questions by U.K. Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell.
