Shock revelation: Churchill Aint No Cherokee!

Ward Churchill is the professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado who has been in the news because of an article he wrote applauding the September 11 attacks and characterizing people who work in the financial services industry as "little Eichmanns." (It's good to know that our young people are being taught by professors with such a sophisticated understanding of economics.) It turns out that Churchill, who has long claimed to be an Indian and has written books comparing the American government's treatment of Indians to the Holocaust, may be a fraud as well a a charlatan:

Ward Churchill, the university professor under fire for likening victims of the 9/11 attacks to Nazis, has been misrepresenting himself as a member of an American Indian tribe, a Cherokee official claims.
Churchill, coordinator of American Indian Studies at the University of Colorado, claims to be a member of the Keetoowah Cherokee tribe in Oklahoma but "is not in the database at all and is not a member of the Keetoowah," tribal clerk George Mauld told the Rocky Mountain News.

A past student, a Manda-Hidatsa Indian named Jodi Rave, reported years ago that Churchill had enrolled in the Keetoowah tribe under a program that allowed almost anyone to sign up. The program was later discontinued, and all who had joined the tribe under it were "disenrolled," Rave said.

Despite what Rave calls Churchill's "fraudulent" claim of American Indian heritage, he serves as co-director of the Colorado chapter of the American Indian Movement and as vice chairman of the American Indian Anti-Defamation Council.


As we've said before, Native Americans tend to be highly patriotic, so it's no wonder that the Cherokee have no desire to claim Churchill as one of their own.

And just to give you some information you may not know, Leonard Peltier and his defense team don't seem to think Ward Churchill has been treated fairly. (If you don't know who Leonard Peltier is, I would reccomend you look up information regarding him, you may be surprised what our government has done to HIM for his beliefs.)
I think many of Ward Churchill's statements have been quoted out of context, it seems no one has read the essay in it's entirety, if they have and still feel he's some sort of "terrorist", maybe they just don't understand what this man-who, I might add, is entitled to the same free speech all Americans are- has to say.

Leonard Peltier has been a cause célèbre of the radical left since practically the very day of the killings on June 26, 1975. He is serving two consecutive life terms for those crimes and a Google search for “Leonard Peltier” will return 69,200 hits including www.freepeltier.org at the top of the list. He is touted as being a “Native American Political Prisoner.” This despite his having been tried and convicted, having several appeals and petitions denied, and review of the case by Federal appeals court. All this with a legal eagle tab of millions of dollars – no slouch public defenders for Mr. Peltier – being picked up by you and me.

February 19, 1976 - Affidavit








Myrtle Poor Bear, being first duly sworn, deposes and states:

1. I am an American Indian, born February 20, 1952, and reside at Allen, South Dakota, one of the United States of America.

2. I first met Leonard Peltier in Bismarck, North Dakota, during 1971. During March, 1975, I again met Leonard Peltier at St. Francis, South Dakota, United States of America. During April, 1975, I went to North Dakota to see him as a girl friend of his. About the last week of May during 1975 I and Leonard Peltier went to the Jumping Bull Hall near Oglala, South Dakota, United States of America. There were several houses and about four or five tents. When Leonard arrived, he gave orders on what was to be done. I was his girl friend at this time. About a week after we arrived, about the second week of June, 1975, Leonard Peltier and several others began planning how to kill either Bureau of Indian Affairs Department, United States Government police or Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Government, agents who might come into this area. Leonard Peltier was mostly in charge of the planning. All persons involved in the planning had special assignments. There was also a detailed escape route planned over the hills near the Jumping Bull Hall area. I was present during he planning. Leonard Peltier always had a rifle and usually had a pistol near him. The pistol was usually under a car seat. About one day before the Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation were killed, Leonard Peltier said he knew the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Bureau of Indian Affairs were coming to serve an arrest warrant on Jimmy Eagle. Leonard Peltier told people to get ready to kill them and he told me to get my car filled with gas to be ready for an escape. I left Jumping Bull Hall at this point and did not return. During August, 1975, I met Leonard Peltier again at Crow Dog's Paradise on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota, United States of America. We talked about the killing of the two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents near Jumping Bull Hall. Leonard said it makes him sick when he thinks about it. He said that one of the agents surrendered, but he kept shooting. He said it was like a movie he was watching but it was real, he was just acting right in it. He said he lost his mind and just started shooting. He said he shot them and just kept pulling the trigger and couldn't stop.

I agree, and I know what you're saying. I have to admit, I haven't kept up with Churchill's story lately, so I don't know what has happened. Have they done anything? The last I had read was they were looking into some other things he had done as a professor (not this essay.) Curious to find out. My impression was that if they couldn't get him on this, they would find something.
I don't want everyone to think I completely agree with Churchill. I think he was a little overboard with his statements. However, my interpretaion of what he wrote was not that those specific people in the towers deserved to be killed, but, that we as American's have to know that our country has done some things that maybe we shouldn't have. We have hurt other countries, and sometimes those things come back to haunt us.

i've seen professor churchill speak (albeit just a few minutes of video). the man's heart is filled with nothing but hatred. what is a shame is that he doesn't spend his time, you know, teaching, as he's paid to do, rather than spewing vitriol, and trying to inculcate new students to his warped ideology.
