No a perscription to an anti-depressant won't get you a disabilty here not by a long shot. If that were the case half the country would be disabled. Benefits are reviewed every 2 years for the first 4 years if I remember correctly then you can go 5 or 7 years before the next review. But the option for them to review your case can be done at anytime.

That is stark comapred to the UK. From what I see of my neighbour, you simply have to be given a prescription for anti-depressents from your Doctor and that's it. I am going to do some research into it to learn more. Don't get me wrong... Any poor sole suffering from manic depression must be declared disbaled but so many take the pisse here. I really get annoyed when they are having holidays in the sun on benifit and pensioners who have worked all their lives can't pay their heating bills.

Re: Disability benefit for the work shy????

My doctor has asked me to file for disability. I can't NOT work. I just recently found out that here in the U.S. we have working while disabled disability. Most people would not even attempt to work with the pain I feel after a 6 1/2 hour day. If I do file for working while disabled, I may be able to cut down on days, and if I would become totally disabled, it would make it easier to get full disability.

I don't think the U.S. any longer recognizes alcoholism as a disability.

I do know when you file for disability, you must get all your records from all your doctors, and fill out tons of paperwork. You then are referred to specialist, which you do not pay for, but you must show for each and every appointment no matter what. If you really need the disability, you'll be there.

Re: Disability benefit for the work shy????

Maybe benefit should be handed out as a voucher rather than cash, that can be redeemable at the supermarkets. The vouchers can be exchanged for food, paying bills etc but not for beer and cigarettes.

My mums neighbour has never done a days work in his life. He stay in all day with a bottle of sherry and goodness knows how many packets of cigarettes. The house stinks like an old ashtray and the weeds in the garden are 6 foot high. The benefits he recieves seem to do him quite nicely

The Tories were talking about replacing benifit with food vouchers for mothers like my neighbour whos' kids are thin and grubby while she stokes up on cut price booze and ciggs. The big question is how do we get round the problem the US has with food stamps where they are sold on for cash? One very good Idea that was posted here on another thread was crediting store card reward cards so that only food could be redeemed at the checkout. The drawback I see with that, is that the cashiers would become 'Food Police' and possibly subjected to abuse when refusing to sell them alcohol and ciggs. I do think the Idea of repacing some of the benifit with vouchers that can only be redeemed for Utility bills is a good Idea.

I smoke and my house stinks of ciggs And... have you seen the nettles in my garden???

So glad you recovered to be here.
This is already in place in the UK, long term sick claimants have to attend a doctor interviews every 3 months to be assessed.

My sister works for jobcentre plus and the directive is, to get long term DLA and sickness claimants back into work.
The problem she feels is the people with mental health issues, bi-polar etc is, when they go for the interview they are asked questions like can you touch your toes etc, to check their dexterity.
The problems start when they have to attend interviews, filling in forms etc, they start to go to pieces, She's interviewed a number of people that clearly just aren't fit for work.

Re: Disability benefit for the work shy????

In my state, food stamps have been replaced with a card you use and enter a PIN number. I'm sure people are still finding ways to get around it. When I worked in a store, you couldn't buy hot foods that were already made like chicken, but that didn't stop them from trying.

As I said before, bi-Polar sufferes etc must be registered disabled. It is the one's like my neighbour where I just don't get It Abbey. I see this woman in the street nearly every day, and she send the kids round when her electric runs out and she wants a tenner. there is nothing depressed about being in the pub 4 nights a week and having your wacky Baccy mates round smoking and drinking all day. The Doctor has just turned down a re-newed application for disabliity for her yet one night, she rang my husband up and asked If he'd drive her Into a certain area of town and bring her back again. I was suspicious so he made an excuse. She must have got desperate because later that night, she posted on facebook that she had cycled a round trip of 7 miles to get her dope ( No, I don't mean her boyfriend). When her little boy was in my house one day, he did not know the difference between an apple and a pear in my fruit bowl. She phones our friends take-away for a delivery of kebabs 3 times a week yet It's all on benifit. Her children are grubby and under-fed and she told me very recently that our GP had put her forward for IVF on the NHS because It looks like her new man has a plumbing problem. people like this just make me rant and rave.... Sorry
