Disability benefit for the work shy????

'Too weak to walk' disability claimant caught pounding the pavement as a traffic warden | Mail Online

I was at a meeting Thursday with local Councillors. The Tory's told me that If they come to power, they are going to have a massive clamp down one folk like the Chap in the above article. He claimed that GP's are handing out Disibility badges to the workshy along with the genuine folk and he wants a major over-haul of the whole system. One of the area's he said they will target is GP's classing folk suffering from depression, alcohol and drug abuse as 'Disbaled' and give the genuine disabled Increased benifits that they deserve.

How do you feel about this?

Re: Disability benefit for the work shy????

what some do here? They sit around drinking their beer all day and expect to get paid for it.

Perhaps if they didn't drink so much, they wouldn't need disabiltiy.

some do not warrant disability cheques.

I have a neighbour in her thirties who I knew was on benifit. She started ranting and raving one day to me that the Doctor had refused to re-new her claim for Disability benifit. I knew her well so was astonished that she was claiming Disablitiy Benifit. When I asked why she was disabled, she told me It was for depression. I never said anything to her but really wanted to say that she didn't look very depressed to me when I see her in the pubs 4 nights a week laughing her face off and buying her beer out of her benifit. She also stocks up on cut price booze and ciggs the moment she gets her cheque along with her cannibis. Because her Doc wouldn't renew the Disability benifit, she had to go on Jobseekers allowence which meant she had to look for work. She was livid.

We have them in the US as well not so much anymore as they have clamped down on what is declared a disability. They also use surprise visits on claimants and their physicians.
I was disabled for 10 years after breaking my neck I didn't want to be on it 1 day longer then was necessary. The paper work is over the top here your have to go through a complete re-evaluation every 2 years with your physician's and a panel of doctors that the government sends you to also. I also had long term disability through my employer so I had to do their massive amounts of paper work as well.

Unless it's an easier process in the UK I hated every day I was on it even thought I needed every day I was on it to recover and get back to work.

Thanks Carla for that... Would you mind If I related your post to the Councillors at our next meeting as they are looking at ways this country can tighten up the system here.? A panal of Physicans by the Government sounds a great way to weed out some of the spongers here.
So glad you recovered to be here.

Sure we don't have a perfect system but it is better than most. The sad part is people that actually need the benefits are often denied or die before they get them. We have advocates here to help those in need who don't know how to fill out all the forms or get their doctors in line with the process.
The checks and balances are better now as the process is reviewed every 2 years regardless if it is a permanent disability when you first applied. As we all know slackers will use the system as much as they can.

It sounds an excellent set up. Will Obama be changing anything about It under his health care over-haul? Do you regard depression as a disabilty in the States? I'd be very Interested to hear.

I'm not sure if it will change under the new plan. YES depression is considered a disability but the guideline are very strict as with all disabilities you have to have several physicians that agree and a panel as well. In order to get SSD you have to wait 2 years from the time of your disability to even qualify for any benefits which can be devastating if you don't have long term disability benefits from you employer. You then have to apply for Medical benefits through your state system which is yet another large process. The processes here are long and grueling and there are no guarantees you will get the benefits. They also go after physicians who use the system as well.

That is stark comapred to the UK. From what I see of my neighbour, you simply have to be given a prescription for anti-depressents from your Doctor and that's it. I am going to do some research into it to learn more. Don't get me wrong... Any poor sole suffering from manic depression must be declared disbaled but so many take the pisse here. I really get annoyed when they are having holidays in the sun on benifit and pensioners who have worked all their lives can't pay their heating bills.
