Thumbs up Question: Why Don't We Enjoy Fall, Forget Winter?

Posted by Dave who runs Huckleberries Online:
"I was in City Park this evening, and you know, the place almost looked forlorn. The last gasps of summer were fast drifting by as the sun set, and I was just about the only person in that large expanse. Can it be only a month or so ago that the place was still teeming with activity at 8pm; tonite at 8pm, darkness had come by then and everyone cleared outta there. I view the shortening of the days with mixed emotions. On one hand, things will (hopefully) get back to normal around here. On the other hand, shorter days mean the passing of the seasons, and I for one, just don't like the ever-earlier onslaught of darkness as it gets close to winter. Hmmm, how about that. I'm fretting about winter when fall isn't even here yet. Doesn't "summer" technically end sometime in September? -- CDADave/Thin Air."

DFO: CDADave and Mari Meehan/Dogwalk Musings have both mentioned the coming of winter in recent blog posts. And most of us are thinking about the first blast of old Jack Frost rather then looking forward to another beautiful Indian summer.

Question: Why do we torture ourselves this way? Why do we greet Labor Day with a grim realization that winter's on the way, rather than fall?

preparation for mega depression come winter??

Probably because we walk into the department store on a nice hot sunny day looking for a new pair of shorts for a special event held say... tomorrow (september 8 as a random day) and find nothing but parkas, winter boots, halloween candy and a hint of the jolly fat guy in red........ yeah that depresses me in early September

Re: Question: Why Don't We Enjoy Fall, Forget Winter?

OK...I'll offer another perspective. I LOVE AUTUMN because it promises WINTER! The Chinese elms on my street are very subtly signalling that soon their leaves will begin to fall and I'm delighted to see it!

What's more fun than a breezy day with gorgeous foliage? Forget trying to walk in hundred-degree weather! I want to need a sweater and feel good in the chilly air.

Autumn leads into winter, with cool days and billowy clouds and hot drinks and RAIN! (Well, what passes for a rainy season in So. California, anyway.) I love the way plants go to sleep. I love to see the birds stopping at my feeders on their way to Mexico.

The older I get, the more enjoyable it is just to watch seasons change!

Well I love the change in the Seasons. I just wish there was more of a change not much happens here in San Diego for the most part it is Summer year round, but there is a slight change come the end of October little cooler, fall leaves, and you might actually put on a light sweater. But it doesn't last long Thankgiving we usually have summer weather, then again it can be fall like. Winter we just don't have the here very often, we may have a rainy winter but no snow.. you have to head to the mountains to see that which is all of an hour away..

Labor day here just means there is 2 more months of hot weather before it gets a little cooler. I miss the fall, hell i miss seeing 4 seasons

Re: Question: Why Don't We Enjoy Fall, Forget Winter?

Because fall is a short time in some areas, and the fleeting beauty of the autumn leaves pales when the coldness of winter creeps in. Some of us just enjoy summer the most, and are sad to see it go. I could live in summer bliss all year long, I never look forward to the snowy dark days of winter.

I'll trade you 10" of snow in January for your 55 degree weather.
