Oh Where Have Those Days Gone.

How's This For Nostalgia?
All the girls had ugly gym slips?Mine was Navy Blue and me knickers were
It took five minutes for the TV to warm up and to have a tele was wow!!!
Nearly everyone's Mum was at home when the kids got home from school...
Nobody owned a purebred dog...
When a shilling was a decent allowance....
You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny? Gawd the times I did that
Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?
All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels?
You got your windscreen cleaned, oil checked, and petrol served, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps!
Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?
It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents?
They threatened to keep kids back a year if they failed. . . And they did it!
When a Ford Zephyr was everyone's dream car...to cruise, or watch the boys lol ... And people went 'steady!
No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?
Lying on your back in the grass with your friends?
And saying things like, 'That cloud looks like a... '? Oh the simple things were the best.
Stuff from the chemist's came without safety caps! And hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?
And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savour the slower pace, and share it with the children of today...
When being sent to the head teacher's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home.....that stays in my mind big time lol.
Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.
Also Summers filled with bike rides, cricket games, Hula Hoops, bowling and swimming at the pool.
Don't that feel good, just to go back and say, 'Yeah, I remember that!!!
Who can still remember the Coronation, Mr Pastry, 6.5 Special, The Army Game , Sunday Night at the London Palladium, Emergency Ward 10, the Lone Ranger, Hancock's Half Hour, Trigger and Sergeant Bilko.
Sweet cigarettes.....Oh I loved them and lemon sherberts,
You're never alone with a Strand.Still remember the music to that lol.
Coffee shops and Pubs with Jukeboxes. I have my own Juke Box now from those days and so I live my memory of that all the time.Watching that record go down is the best feeling ever....oh I did some daft things back then
Blackjacks and bubblegums
Home milk delivery in glass bottles with foil tops.
Newsreels before the pictures......Oh I can still see that in my mind
Telephone numbers with a word prefix...(Mayfair 3489). Party lines.
Peashooters.
Andy Pandy.
Hi-If's & 45 RPM records.
78 RPM records!
Green Shield Stamps.
Comptometers.
Scalextric.
Decisions were made by going 'eeny-meeny-miney-moe'?
'Race issue' meant arguing about who ran the fastest?
Catching tiddlers could happily occupy an entire day
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was'chickenpox'?
Having a Weapon in School meant being caught with a catapault?
Saturday morning television wasn't 30-minute commercials for action figures.
Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles.
The Worst Embarrassment was being picked last for a team?
War was a card game?
Cigarette cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?
Taking drugs meant orange - flavoured chewable aspirin.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon lol
If you can remember most or all of these guess yer old like me

Re: Oh Where Have Those Days Gone.

margarine came in a bag with a huge red dot, you would squish it and red dye would come out, mix it more and the margarine turned yellow.

now we have pre-dyed!

Re: Oh Where Have Those Days Gone.

milkman was on horse and buggy, delivering bottles of milk and as Carolly said, foil tops, we used to take the cream off the top.

I was just little then, waited everyday just to see his horse!

excellent thread, rated it a 5!

Re: Oh Where Have Those Days Gone.

The Queen's Coronation was two years before I was born.
The girls used to tuck their skirts or dresses into their knickers. This was at infants and juniors, not at seniors where they had proper gym slips. The boys all wore shorts until they went to seniors.
Slippering up to juniors and caning at seniors. I never got that myself though I was spanked by the head once at juniors.
One of us got the mumps and we all were made to get it. Funnily enough, I never caught it.
We used to make hides in the woods. We were able to play in the roads. We used to have play areas where the swings, roundabouts and iron horse were usable.
Didn't like letter prefixes on telephone numbers. Often had to guess the third letter and you lost your four old copper pennies if it was wrong.
Mum had a washing machine with a spin-drier. Before that, she had a copper boiler. She always used the copper stick, as it was called, to threaten us (though she never ever used anything other then her hand across the backs of our legs).
Everyone seemed to be in cub scouts or brownies.
I remember the first episode of Doctor Who.
Silver top, red top, and gold top for extra creamy.
I still have my parents 78s. I do have a 4-speed player. Does anyone know what 16rpm was used for (Spot excluded)?
I used to be able to go exploring with no fear of being kidnapped.
Saturday morning cinema, or I could go roller-skating among other things. Dr. Kildare. Perry Mason. Coronation Street never changed its characters. Hancock's half hour.
