The role of a police officer
I just want you to all think for one minute about the job that a police officer actually does.
I have held the hand of a dying man in an RTC that I was first on scene at, without anyone able to get there for 5 minutes. The man died in front of me. I have stood for 5 hours in sub zero temperatures securing a murder scene, whilst the emergency services do their job and also having press constantly asking me questions about the incident. I have hugged bereaved relatives when I have had to tell them that a loved one has been found dead. I have saved a 13 year old girl from choking on her own vomit after taking an overdose. I have stopped a man from jumping off the Clifton suspension bridge. I have supported a victim of domestic violence that was so scared of being attacked by her ex partner that she lived in constant fear. She still thanks me to this day for the way I dealt with her. I have been kicked, spat at, punched. Had the worst kind of language used at me. And what is difficult to deal with, is that I regard myself as a lady. I am feminine and speak with respect to people that are respectful to me. Most important I am someone’s wife, someone’s mothers, someone’s daughter, sister niece, and friend. I have no airs and graces and don’t believe that I am better than anyone. I am not full of my own self importance. I know that I have made a difference to many people’s lives. I can go to bed without any reservations for my life. I thank god for every day and live life to the full. I am blessed to have my life and wish that everyone could live in harmony and respect each other. Unfortunately some members if the community we live in, are unable to do this. This is why we have laws and the brave people that put themselves out there every day to protect and serve our country. I have read some really negative stories about the police and it is so sad that people have such hatred for people that are merely doing their job and making a difference doing so. Finally ask yourself are your happy? Are you proud of yourself? Have you made a real difference to someone’s life? I can answer yes to all those answers, and that’s all that matters. ![]() |

Re: The role of a police officer
I notice that your are from Australia, and so sadly synical.
That then leads me to the question, have you had some bad experience with the police in your country? If you had then that awful. You cant possibly comment on the police over here in the uk, unless you have experience of the uk police. All i know is the police i know are without doubt upstanding members of the community. Surely you need to broaden your mind and allow for freedom of speech without coming back at me with a sneering response. This only belittles you. And... remember one day you might just need the police, will you be so rude and arrogant then... I very much doubt it. Unless its too late and your writing this from prison. ![]() |

Re: The role of a police officer
Well actually I have in Scotland and he was a lovely bloke. Gave him one of our police teddies. Known police officers quite intimately actually. One of your top cops happens to be a lovely person that I know quite well.
Here, we seem to cop your commissioners. Quote:

Re: The role of a police officer
Quote:
The police in England have a dreadful reputation when it comes to violence and battery. ![]() That's the role of a police officer and it shouldn't be. That's policing just as much as the cotton-candy feelgood ooze you came out with in your opening post. See the baton? The helmet? The shield? People who've tried legitimate protest in England have little faith in the Boys In Blue, what they see is shock and awe stormtroops answering to political controllers. They see criminals in uniform who slip off identifer tags to avoid repercussions from enquiries. They see inept commanders and paid trained killers blindly following ill-considered lethal protocols which blow away people like Jean Charles de Menezes. That's another role of a police officer and it most definitely shouldn't be. The degree of surveillance available to English police exceeds the wildest dreams of the Stazi. It amazes me that so little genuine policing takes place given the resources available. What I object to most is the one-sided nature of interrogation, the police knowing what a court will require in order to convict while the person being interviewed has no such advantage. The resulting signed statement has everything in needed for conviction regardless of the truth of the content, even though it may accurately summarise what's been extracted during the interview. You'd deny, I assume, that officers lie on oath in order to swing a conviction which without it would fail. Take it from me, the general image of the English police is one in which that's endemic. I just want you to think for one minute about the job that a police officer actually does.

Re: The role of a police officer
I have great respect for law enforcement officials, I have two brother-in-laws who are sheriffs. Not an easy job that they do.
