BATON ROUGE, La. – At least four times in the last 2 1/2 years, Keith Bardwell says he refused to marry interracial couples while serving as a Louisiana justice of the peace.
He said from his experience and discussions, he had concluded that blacks and whites do not readily accept offspring of such relationships, so the children end up suffering.
His latest rebuff to a bride and groom of different races turned out to be his last. After weeks of calls for his ouster, Bardwell resigned after 34 years in office Tuesday, leaving his reasons a secret.

Floppy - where I grew up we had a clergyman who counselled young couples who wished to be married in his church which I suppose would be the equivalent of a Baptist congregation. He refused to marry them if they had did before they got to say I do.

Always seemed odd to me. A Catholic priest would have had them married instantly, probably.

Humans are strange. And when they get into positions of power, that just gives them an extra opportunity to impose their strangenesses on others.

Not even a century ago that judge would probably have been a hero of the establishment.

On a forum like this race and religion don't really come in to it until it comes up in conversation so you're not prejudging the person based on those criteria. Come to that the person's sex isn't always immediately obvious either. It doesn't matter until it crops up which perhaps shows how little it actually matters. I didn't know your sex or race until this thread and hadn't given it a moments thought either. It still doesn't really matter- your posts haven't somehow become less interesting because I now know. I knew you were from texas but an impression of texas borne out of watching dallas, the oulaw josey wales, the alamo with John Wayne and GW Bush is not much to go on.

Same with inter religion marriages-I know people who were ostracised for marrying in to the wrong religion years later they usually reconcile with their parents as people realise that you haven't somehow become an alien because you married someone outside the norm.

Inter-racial marriages might be harder but only if what other people think gets in the way. How much should you care about other peoples prejudice? Which is an easy question for me to put since I am not in that kind of situation

I often wonder what the poster of that opinion is, male or female ?
It doesn't matter.
Inter racial relationships are not the problem, it is others outside that can cause problems.
Now inter cultural relationships !!!!....that is something else.
I am married to a women that happens to be black, our only problems arise over cultural differences.

We shouldn't look down our noses at Louisiana Justices-it wasn't that long go that people were being stuffed in to ovens for being the wrong race-and the colour of their skin had absolutely nothing to do with it. There were many who thought the reasoning for being racist was perfectly sound-scientific even. It's sometimes not the racism itself that shocks but the compelling logic from people you know are intelligent and are just exactly like you. We're all brought up with prejudices of one kind or another it's sometimes really hard to get away from them.
