VMA awards - date rape as a joke!?

I realise the MTV awards were aired some time ago, mid September, but I didn't watch them. I caught a few minutes of a rerun while channel surfing and what a shocking few minutes.

Everyone was talking afterwards about Kanye West's major faux pas regarding Taylor Swift but somehow the host, Russell Brand, making a joke about date raping Megan Fox was not worthy of criticism.

This was the few minutes I was subjected to:

“She has admitted she is a little bit cuckoo upstairs and I have trained in psychiatry. So Megan, if you do have a little dizzy spell love, I could probably drop you a little pill. You can go and have a lie down in my dressing room. You might get some crazy dreams about being visited by a scarecrow, a perfumed weirdo leaning over you. But let me tell you, that’s a common side-effect. Megan, take your medicine.”

I was still shocked a few days later and finally had to look it up to find out what awards show I'd been watching. Thankfully a few other people were outraged enough to post about it too. Rape is a Crime – Not a Punch Line is where I got the quote from.

No media seem to have thought it was worth mentioning.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the lingo. Perhaps you can break it down for me? How do you know its not a reference to something we may be unaware of?

For all I know, the girl may have slept with a psychiatrist or is on a medication. What does the metaphor of a scarecrow and perfume smell mean?

Rohypnol has physiological effects similar to Valium (diazepam), but is approximately ten times more potent.

Intoxication is generally associated with impaired judgment and motor skills. The drug has no taste or odor, so those given it don't realize what is happening. About ten minutes after ingesting the drug, a woman may feel dizzy and disoriented, simultaneously too hot and too cold, and/or nauseated. She may experience difficulty speaking and moving, and then pass out. Effects peak within two hours, and can persist for up to eight hours. Such victims have no memories of what happened while under the drug's influence.

You may very well be correct. then again it may be just a young idiot mouthing off in front of a camera.

though I don't have a problem with calling the kid to task for the remark, and if it is what you say - then MTV should be shut down for not editing it out and firing the little bastard.

Firing the bastard, yes.
Editing I'm not so sure about. I think it's better to deal with the **** people say and provide a responsible reaction instead of pretending people don't say or think it.

Ideally he'd have been thrown off the show after the comments were made. I believe Kanye West was removed after his stunt with Taylor Swift. With all the controversy that happens on awards shows you'd think they'd keep emergency backup emcees standing by.
