Things that wouldn't have happened under Saddam Hussein

Supporters of cleric Moqtada Sadr broke through barricades of the fortified Green Zone in protest against delays in approving a new cabinet.

A state of emergency was declared in Baghdad after the protests.

Re: Things that wouldn't have happened under Saddam Hussein

I'm blaming the 2003 regime change solely and entirely for the current disastrous condition of Iraq, which under the Presidency of Saddam Hussein used to be a justifiably proud sovereign secular Republic. The planners and implementers of the destruction of Iraq should be tried before a court for waging a war of aggression while they're still alive to account for their crime.

Yes, I agree with you that a vicious, genocidal, murderous tyrant who brutally tortured, victimized, and slaughtered his own people was proud of his accomplishments. That's what you meant, right? My friend often says the same thing, "Saddam was a cold blooded killer, but at least his people were scared enough of him to stay peaceful. We should instate another psychopathic dictator, then we wouldn't have to worry about things again."

    He's a redneck, though...

It was America's insistence on installing a Quisling-style governor in his place which led to the present debacle.

Again, I agree with you. Leaving a psychopath in power would have been easier on everyone.

    Not moral, though...

You'll recall that Saddam Hussein was extensively debriefed by American interviewers before he was hanged? I recommend you contrast the published report with your propaganda-biased description of the chap.

It's not the job of any American agency to instate Presidents beyond its own homeland border and it never has been. To describe the intervention as "moral" is something I'd love to see tested in a court, the word would be purely satirical grave-humor if it were applicable in this case.

Well, I think that even Daddy Bush shoulda left him alone, and let him have his way with Kuwait.

I never really liked Kuwaitis, much. He could have kept the Saudis in line, too.

As the assault on Mosul gets reestablished, I would like to juxtapose two news snippets.

    1. The UN humanitarian co-ordinator for Iraq, Lise Grande, told the BBC on Saturday that "all of the parties to the conflict do absolutely everything they can to ensure that civilians survive the battle, and that they live". "Absolutely nothing is more important going into the campaign to retake western Mosul," she added.

    2. "Aircraft are dropping very large bombs".

They'll not be Iraqi aircraft. Iraq isn't allowed aircraft any longer.

    They're American aircraft.

I expect Americans are exempt from the "do absolutely everything they can to ensure that civilians survive the battle" bit, America being exceptional.
