God, are you still there?

Dear God,

This may sound presumptuous, but are you still there?

I know 2,000 years is not much time in the scheme of eternity, but right about now things are not going so well down here. I’m sure I am not telling you anything you don’t already know, but just in case you have been looking in another direction there are a lot of people using your name to justify lots of bad stuff, I mean like cutting off peoples heads, shooting other people who also use your name quite often and walking around blowing themselves up with the hope of taking other people with them. And then there is some minor stuff too, like changing textbooks, and the debate over evolution and creation. Intolerance comes to mind.

There are a bunch of us down here who just don’t get it. Just a suggestion, but did you carry this “free will” thing a bit too far? I’m not sure you are counting, but church attendance is going down, civility is non existent and all kinds of radical stuff is attributed to You. I may be a little off base here, but I think you need to start paying more attention to this creation of yours called human beings. It seems like after Adam and Eve it’s been all down hill.

Did you really authorize a Holy War, which seems like an oxymoron to me, but hey, you’re the boss.

The other thing you might want to work on is all this diversity stuff, like Catholics, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Methodists, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Scientologists, Mormons and a lot more. Like who’s right and who’s wrong or are they all right, all wrong, is anyone in the lead (a tip on that horse would be appreciated, but I digress)? All I know is they all think they are right and that everyone else is wrong.

I’m not sure how much you did to create all these differences, but you may have made a mistake, I know, I know that’s not supposed to happen. Look at it this way, for the last two thousand years every time someone wants to further their own ends, they find a scapegoat and then use religion to justify the means to an end. Do the Crusades ring a bell or the Spanish Inquisition, where were you on September 11, 2001 (just asking)? And other thing (I hope I don’t get too carried away, it’s all constructive criticism after all), do you want separation of church and state? A little more clarification on that wouldn’t hurt. I’ve noticed that in some parts of this small world, politics and pontification are getting all mixed up.

We could also use a little help with interpretation, who wrote what and when, who did you tell to say what and most of all…. are you a literal kind of guy or can we assume that there is room for interpretation (I hope).

Finally, about those TV preachers and evangelists, are shiny suites, big rings, and Rolex’s part of the official uniform? Is there a little false advertising going on here? Do they really have your private line, how about your e-mail or fax number?

Seriously though, we really could use a little more direct intervention, nothing cataclysmic mind you, but something to get us ALL back on track and if you would like to start in the Middle East and work your way west it couldn’t hurt.

Thanks for listening (I hope).

Your appreciative creation,

He may have already answered you, but you didn't hear Him.

Bingo! This is especially true if it's not the answer we hoped to hear.
