Definition Of Religion
is this a fair definition of religion?
"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of 10 things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these 10 things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! . . . But He loves you!" —George Carlin |

Hell, yes! (Pun intended). I also like Bart Simpson's comment after Lisa read aloud from a book on the religious beliefs of an ancient American Indian civilisation: Lisa: The mound builders worshipped turtles as well as badgers, snakes and other animals. Bart: Thank God we've come to our senses and worship a carpenter who lived 2000 years ago. |

Re: Definition Of Religion
Of course it's not fair. I love good-natured jokes as much as the next guy, and Carlin is a favorite, but to deride another person's religion is as low and disrespectful as to laugh and make rude comments about a person's spouse. One Gardener does this, though it's become rarer, and it is truly disgusting.

Re: Definition Of Religion
I don't know, I think if you boil it down to the bare bones then yes its a fair discription.
Of course religion is more complex, more emotional of course there is faith and belief involved but otherwise.....Yes thats it |

I'd say thats about right, 'religion' (mankind) has done a good job of reducing biblical truth to a list of ten basic do's/don'ts handed out by an invisible entity. But in reality God is not a man, he is not like man at all, and is a Spirit, and the list does exists, but you do not get punished for doing or not doing the list... punishment is for those who refuse to recognize that God is. The list is incidental. So Yes, Mr Carlins right, in my opinon, religion is a convaluted pack of lies perpetrated by mankind to make true belief a farce so mankind can do whatever it is that it wants to do as guilt free and in ingorance of the truth as possible. The only problem is that Mr Carlin said this, of course, to perpetuate the myth of religion and keep doing everything he desired regardless of how it affected the truth that God is. I gurantee he knows the truth now. |

"But he loves you" was the punchline... Anyone who tries to pass this excerpt off as a legitimate definition of religion is one who is conforming a religion out of atheism and is trying to pass their beliefs on to others in the same way many see other religions trying to pass their beliefs on to others... |
