http://www.benbest.com/lifeext/causes.html tells you more than you ever wanted to know about causes of death, US and worldwide.

Worldwide, AIDS is the cause of 5.3% of all deaths (2000), less than heart attacks, strokes and pneumonia. In the USA, dying of AIDS doesn't get onto the charts at all, falling short of death by firearm, poisoning, alcohol, other infection, obesity and tobacco in terms of behavioural causes.

The link is useful mostly for the places it links to, but the summaries are effective if rough.

I'm not sure (I'm pretty sure Spot will correct me ) but I would imagine malaria must still be one of the worlds deadliest diseases

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that in the history of mankind, Malaria had killed more people than all other diseases combined.

I recall reading ( maybe an urban myth) that malaria had killed HALF the people that had EVER lived

The top three stand way out ahead of the field.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infecti...tious_diseases

"The top three single agent disease killers worldwide are first HIV/AIDS, then TB, and thirdly malaria."
