The stark truth... tomorrows the day....

Thankyou again to all you kind peeps who have messaged me about my husbands lung cancer. It is secondry cancer but a few days ago he was told this stark truth. We can help you but If you do not stop smoking now... you won't live another 9 months.
This means I must stop with him.
We have spent two hours with the nurse. We have the patches, a plastic thing to suck that makes you look a Pillock in public, Nicotine chewing gum etc etc.
Tonight before we go to bed, all lighters, ashtrays etc will be smashed and binned.

Pete only smokes 15 a day but I smoke 60 a day. If anyone could give us any tips to distract ourselves, I would be very very grateful.

Thanks

I don't have any advice its a tough habit to break. I know you both can do it as it is so vital to both your health. I will send good thought and strength your way sometimes the stark truth is the best medicine. You can do it.

you can't use all 3........that will kill you both.

just use one only........the gum works well....but the cravings are still there, the program takes 3 months.

but the patch is better as it filters nicotine into your system at all times....you will never have 'the urge' again.

I wish I had some advice to give you. I only made it 5 hours with the patch on the other day.

Re: The stark truth... tomorrows the day....

To be blunt...........it's what they call a 'No brainer'

I am a long time smoker, every few months the lungs clog up, the mucous, the wheeze, the shortage of breathe, makes me question why I smoke.

I 'gave up' a few weeks ago, after the weed got to me yet again, that frightening feeling that I am injuring my so delicate lungs, for minimal enjoyment......cos to be honest, how many are that necessary ?
That one after dinner.......that's THE one you enjoy, many, most of the others are habit and nothing more......and some are painful.
I have been non smoking at work, because I told everybody, and rush home and smoke myself to death.
Who is kidding who......I wonder ?

I have always said you must want to give up or else it wont happen.

You have the ultimate reason.....so that's why I say......"It's a no brainer"

Bruv is right.

You smoke, Pete dies.

Sorry. It's as simple as that.

I call them the "three minute madnesses". If you can get through those three minutes, the craving passes and the gaps between them gradually get longer.

Re: The stark truth... tomorrows the day....

when i fell ill due to my drinking i stopped drinking straight away no ifs ,no buts i knew i had to stop

the answer you seek is so very painfull but so very simple

like no one could force me to drink ,no one can force you to smoke

just stop smoking

if you love your husband and want him to live ... just dont buy any fags, dont smoke

what greater reason could you possibly ever have to stop smoking

drinking is an illness that so far i'm beating five months on the 3rd of nov

is smoking an illness or just a bad habbit ....... just stop after 3 days its meant to get easier ,my brother a smoker on 50 a day for over 30 years just stopped no help he just went for walk etc now after a year of no smoking he is feeling much better

good luck ..... just say no

Re: The stark truth... tomorrows the day....

Have a read of my thread in the journal section called I Wonder,,, it might be a good idea for you to keep a journal on it too ,, turn it in to an experiment
this helped me ( in fact it was a big part of my deciding to pack in)
WhyQuit - Nicotine Withdrawal and Recovery Symptoms

Only thing with that is it advocates cold turkey and i have to say i personally agree with it ,, i think it would get the bad bits over quicker,,,, getting patches etc. only puts off the actual doing without! prolonging it imo. But saying that you have to do it the way you thikn you can cope
Physical symptons,, just pretend you are ill,,, if you had a virus or a cold or summat you would just have to put up with being ill till you got better ,,, same thingsometimes i would just put myself to bed in the first couple of weeks
If you can make it through one day,,, then you can do it again for one more day ,,, then one more ,, till its a week ,, and if you can go a week well,,, why were you ever smoking in the first place!!!!!

good luck, and remember, if you are smoking, peter is smoking.

I have seen this a million times, if I have seen it once. Do you want to be one of those people who suck a fag through a hole in your neck, because you are enslaved by it?
I can give you a million and one reasons to quit darling.
But it's down to you how you want to LIVE.
Hooked up to oxygen and puffed out with each step you take, or do you actually WANT to look like a leather purse?

It's not the cig you want, it's the nicotine. Patch. The 24 hour BIG one. Two if you need them. 60 is a trick but it can be done. You MUST equal the nicotine intake you get from cigs.
I'm on step 3. (been on step 3 for months now!) But I am not smoking!

Ask yourself a serious question. What would actually MAKE you quit?
Most people answer this question with "Lung Cancer". But by then it's like closing the barn door after the horse got out.
Your beloved already has that. Secondary smoke can KEEP him from getting better. You MUST protect his lungs at all costs.
It's damage control now.
Your lungs have a capacity to heal themselves and repair damage if it is not too great. Such as emphysema. Too late then.

All I can add, is that I'm here for support and commiseration and a shoulder. ANYTIME hun. x

Re: The stark truth... tomorrows the day....

Good on you and Pete for giving up the fags You're motivated now and can do it.

I gave up smoking years ago. If I can do it, so can you. But, you have to realize that it will be hard...very hard. You'll be miserable for a few months.

Try to stay away from people who smoke and places that allow smoking. Have someone act as a touchstone....someone you can call or email everytime you want a smoke.

Get a jar and put a few pounds in it everytime you can't stop thinking about smoking. Then buy yourself something nice when you've quit smoking.

Get into exercise and take a walk around the block everytime you want a smoke.

Go to a hypnotist......chew gum....think about your lungs turning black....

You can do it Julie
