'Something Bad' Happened to Missing Girl, Suspect Says

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (June 11) - Police investigating the disappearance of an Alabama teenager in Aruba said late Friday that one of three young men in custody has admitted ''something bad happened'' to her during her island visit.

Deputy Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig told The Associated Press that the man was leading police late Friday to the scene. He refused to identify which of the three young men who took her to a beach the night she disappeared made the statement.Natalee Holloway, 18, vanished on May 30 during a five-day trip to the Caribbean island with 124 classmates and seven chaperones celebrating their graduation from Mountain Brook High School, near Birmingham. Police found her U.S. passport and packed bags in her hotel room.

A relative said her family continues to believe she is alive. Rumors raging on the island that she is dead are ''an aggressive interpretation'' of what police are saying, Jar Twitty, the brother of Holloway's stepfather, told the AP.

Three men - two brothers from Suriname and a 17-year-old Dutch student - were arrested Thursday. Two former hotel security guards were also being held in the case. None of the five has been charged.

A lawyer for the two Surinamese - Satish Kalpoe, 18, and his brother Deepak, 21 - said they told police they took Holloway to Arashi Beach, on the northern tip of the island, in the early hours of May 30.

According to their police statement, they didn't get out of the car, defense lawyer David Kock said. Instead, Holloway and the Dutch teen, an honors student at Aruba International School, ''were in the back seat kissing.''

They also told police that they dropped Holloway at her Holiday Inn Hotel around 2 a.m. and last saw her being approached by a man in a security guard uniform before they drove off, Kock said.

The brothers told police the blond, blue-eyed young woman was drunk and refused to get out of the car when asked to, said Noraina Pietersz, who is representing 30-year-old Nick John, one of the two former guards.

The three young men said Holloway stumbled in the parking lot of the hotel but refused help from her Dutch escort, Kock said.

Holiday Inn employees say security cameras did not record Holloway's return. In addition, a Holiday Inn guard who worked the overnight shift the day the young woman disappeared said he did not see her, said Pietersz, who said she reviewed the guard's testimony to police.

In Mountain Brook, Holloway's aunt, Marcia Twitty, expressed frustration that Aruban authorities initially released the three young men last week after questioning them.

''These are the last three guys to be with her, and we just feel like they know something,'' said Twitty, who is serving as the spokeswoman.

The criticism came after Holloway's stepfather, George ''Jug'' Twitty, told the AP the young men told him that Holloway had been flirting with the Dutch student. Police Superintendent Jan van der Straaten said at a news conference that Holloway and the Dutch teen had met two days earlier at the casino of her hotel.

John and Abraham Jones, 28, a fellow former security guard, have been detained since Sunday.

I have not heard yet today what went on there last night...just that "something bad" had happened to her...How sad - but there will eventually be closure (sp?) if they did not put her in the water.. My heart goes out to the parents...and family.

Where might that be? Why would you assume the authorities are corrupt? I don't know whether that is a comment on the american justice system i.e. because a politicians son is involved there will be a cover up, or just a general assumption that foreigners are corrupt.

Given the dependance of tourism they can't not clear this up. They are holding two of the suspects for another eight days while they investigate further. What you won't see is the authorities making any statements as to how the case is proceeding until they charge someone. You should read press reports with a pinch of salt.

the poor mother here is sure the 3 young guys in custody are lying and the security guards innocent. further, the stories of the three young men have changed and now diametrically oppose each other. they are trying to throw each other under the bus. ...............

ORANJESTAD, Aruba -- Lawyers are filing motions Monday demanding a court free two security guards whose innocence was declared by the mother of a missing Alabama teenager.


"The prosecution is pretending it has information we don't have," said one of the lawyers.

The mother of the missing 18-year-old Alabama girl says she's seen the former guards and thinks "they are being wrongly held."

Also Monday, the family said Natalee Holloway's stepfather plans to organize a new search for the teen who disappeared May 30.



In an interview with the "Today Show" on Monday, Beth Holloway Twitty, mother of the missing girl, said that she is frustrated with the apparent lack of progress in determining the fate of her daughter.

"Well, I don’t know if I can say I’m frustrated with the Aruban government," said Holloway Twitty. "I think I am frustrated as a mother, as any individual would (be), that I still do not have my daughter, that I still do not feel like I am any further along in finding my daughter than I was on May 30 when my flight landed here. So, I think that is my frustration."

Holloway Twitty said the three suspects "hold the key" to her daughter's whereabouts.

"Those are the last three men that were with my daughter," she said. "They know what they did with her, and they know where she is."

She said Aruban authorities should pressure the young men to reveal what they know, but she would not say what she thinks the boys may have done or whether she thinks her daughter is still alive.

Holloway Twitty said that a nagging thought in the back of her mind said the Aruban government is protecting the three students. As she put it, it's up to the Aruban authorities to assure her "that will not be an issue."

Holloway Twitty said she appreciates all that Aruban authorities have done but added that she won't be satisfied until they give her back her daughter. She said, "I want her and I want her now."

She also said she thinks two former hotel security guards detained in connection with Holloway's disappearance are innocent and should be released.

Lawyers for all five detained men insist their clients are innocent, and no one has been charged. Prime Minister Nelson Oduber went on national television Sunday night to reaffirm Aruba's commitment to solving the case.

Holloway Twitty said she would not leave Aruba until her daughter is found. She said that her daughter is in "everyone's heart because she's everyone's daughter."
