Home made Ear cleaner for our dogs.

I got this from a website I belong to called www.dailydrool.com.

This Blue Ear Treatment has been around for years; most of the old time vets have used this treatment for years for everything from ears to treating cuts on horse’s legs.

INGREDIENTS:
16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol – you will have to dump out about ½ oz so you have enough room for the rest of the ingredients.
4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Blue Solution 1%
Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.
The Boric Acid Powder will settle to the bottom, so you need to shake the bottle each time you use it.

TREATMENT: Gentian Violet stains anything it gets on, so it is best to treat your dog’s ears outside or on sealed surface linoleum. Warm the solution – your dog will thank you.
For the first three days, flood the ears twice a day, rub the dog’s ears and let him shake it out.
On the fourth days, go to once a day. Using 8 to 10 drops, massage the ear then use baby wipes for the excess.
Continue day four treatment for up to two weeks.
You will be amazed at the results and your dog will be happy.
Use 2 to 3 drops every week when you clean ears and they will stay healthy.

Gentian Violet was used for years for Thrust in baby’s mouth and mother breasts. Thrust is a yeast infection. Modern medicine has moved away from this great treatment because of the stain factor, but old time cures are often times the best.

You might have to call a few Pharmacies’ before you find one that has it or will order the Gentian Violet for you. It is an over the counter item. Usually cost less than $2.00. You can find the Boric Acid Powder in the pharmacy area, usually less than $2.00. Isopropyl Alcohol - less than $1.00.

This treatment works if you are consistent in following the program. So many people who have tried it have reported that it has cleared up ear problems they dogs have had for years. Just remember it stains.

The ingredients of that sound very similar to nolvasan, a disinfectant used in vet clinics. While it may be good for cleaning ears, it shouldn't be used on ear infections, and an infection can be determined only by your vet.
I'd also reccommend using cotton swabs to remove excess fluid and dirt after you flush the ear, just don't get too deep into the ear canal if you don't know what you're doing.

Also, look to what you are feeding your dog. Believe it or not, lots of
ear problems can be directly linked to food allergies. Corn is a biggie,
but there are others. I would try to go after the food with the shortest
list of ingredients.

Some people I know of even resort to "Duck and Potato" dog food!!

Re: Home made Ear cleaner for our dogs.

Thank you for posting this, I'm a new member of FG, and the proud father of a 3 y.o., male schnauzer we got from SRC about 8 months ago. Max was a rescued stray about 24 hrs from being put down when he was rescued. He has one ear that is always flopped down dew to a hemotoba (sp?) and therefor it doesn't get the air circulation it would normally get. We have to clean his ear on a regular basis. I have one question, would this stain the fur? I know, this may be a dumb question, but ... humor me.

BTW, we have applied to adopt a femmale schnauzer, also 3 y.o., and get to meet her tomorrow afternoon. She was a puppy mill rescue, but has been rehabilitated to now know that food and love can come from caring people and that not all humans are mean. Any other Schnauzer parents here? If so, were they rescues or from breeders? I'll try and post a pic of Max for you to see his ears. Again thanks for the tread and I hope to get to know some of you and your pets better.

Re: Home made Ear cleaner for our dogs.

Gentian Blue WILL stain fur. However, this is a very effective treatment.

As I said in the above post, though... you might want to look
to better quality foods, try the single source protein single source
carb for best results. You can get one that is grain free. Natural
Balance makes a potato and duck that is good, but there are
others.

Good luck and welcome to FG!

Re: Home made Ear cleaner for our dogs.

In addition to cleaning your doggies ears - make sure to also clean their teeth!!! So many pet owners don't clean their doggies teeth properly and it can result in dangerous health problems. I think Bright Bites is a good dental treat to use - dogs gnaw on the big star shaped treats and scrape off plaque in the meanwhile....

I feel like with this thread I could be singing, "Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes..."

LOL
