That speaks to him being a human being, Hoss. I don't think he ran as a man without anything to improve about himself. The articles I read implied that this isn't the first time he's quit or tried to quit. But he keeps trying Hoss. He doesn't give up. He strives to do better. And it's a hard road, quiting smoking.

This is my second time I've quit smoking, Hoss. First time was for almost 10 years. Not once during those 10 years or this past year, have I felt superior to anyone I saw smoking. Not once have I judged them as lacking character.

Any bad habit is hard to break. biting your nails, picking your nose, even overeating.

You can judge your fellow man because he fails at something. I prefer to judge him because he tries.

The Little Blue Engine
by Shel Silverstein (1932-1999)

The little blue engine looked up at the hill.
His light was weak, his whistle was shrill.
He was tired and small, and the hill was tall,
And his face blushed red as he softly said,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”
So he started up with a chug and a strain,
And he puffed and pulled with might and main.
And slowly he climbed, a foot at a time,
And his engine coughed as he whispered soft,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

With a squeak and a creak and a toot and a sigh,
With an extra hope and an extra try,
He would not stop — now he neared the top —
And strong and proud he cried out loud,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!”

He was almost there, when — CRASH! SMASH! BASH!
He slid down and mashed into engine hash
On the rocks below... which goes to show
If the track is tough and the hill is rough,
THINKING you can just ain’t enough!
I'm sorry, I don’t want trying, I want doing. I expect our president to be extraordinary, not perfect, but extraordinary. Yes it's tough to quit a habit. But he's got the eyes of children watching and he ought to remember that.

It's called leadership, and until we hold them to a higher standard to lead, we won't have leadership.

Exactly the same with British Politicians and the government, we the tax payer pay's the wages. We have a right to expect high standards from them but i don't think smoking is a big deal. If it was revealed that he drank, then it would bother me.

Re: So Obama smokes. Does it matter?

The only thing I'd wonder about would be his ability to maintain composure in tough situations without lighting up. He may have to be somewhere for over a couple hours where smoking isn't politically correct or where he feels he doesn't want to blow smoke in people's faces, then what should he do? If it were me I'd have a fit if I couldn't light up.

That's what nicotine patches were invented for
