I just don't know what to say to that. I'm stunned.
It seems to me that the US police force behaves more and more like soldiers facing an enemy and less like police officers.
I cannot see any justification for the action they took

I don't understand why they couldn't use Tasar

So the K-9 officer is about six feet away from the guy, when the he supposedly threatened the officer with his knives. He was also turning away, which is hardly a threatening move. When the first cop fired, the second one probably reacted by firing, as well.
They should have had TASERs. That would have been a fairly non-lethal means of pacification.

I can understand the police were nervous, but they had previous dealings with him, knew he had mental issues, had been talking for three hours?
I should trust and hope they get training or have specialists on hand for such situations so that this sort of turn out should never happen.
But at no time were they in immediate danger of death or injury, from what I saw.
Frustration after a long day on the job shouldn't be a reason for such action.

After three hours they must have known whether he had a gun or not if he wasn't carrying a firearm then it was murder. pretty useless police dog.

just now watched the "full video"
THOSE weren't knives!!!. Those were toothpicks. He was no threat to the officers with those knives.
I cannot see where he was ever an actual threat, other than, possibly to the dog, should they have turned it loose on him.
I usually try not to second-guess the guys in the field, but they really could have handled that a lot better.

To me the real shame is the rest of us have to walk the same streets with the likes of that Boyd guy, and others.
James Boyd, 38, sometimes used box cutters, knives and his fists to attack people, including officers, according police reports. He often said he was on a secret mission and on assignment for former President Gerald Ford.
Albuquerque News - KOAT Home
To bad there is no way to just keep him somewhere everybody can be safe.
The video showed a dangerous nut case brandishing knives which under those circumstances can properly be considered a threat of great bodily injury or death.
20/20 hindsight, maybe things could have been handled differently where Boyd would be arrested, later released and once again be a threat to anybody he comes close to.

You're right, of course. They should have just shot him to begin with and saved us all the drama.

That might work for you, but sounds a bit nutty to me.
I would much prefer to just keep him somewhere so everybody can be safe. Our laws don't provide for ways to do such things.

We do have a problem, these days. People with serious issues like this guy may get picked up and turned over to psychiatric facilities for treatment, and become stabilized, but once they are properly medicated and deemed fit, they can decide they don't need to be in the facility, any longer, and demand to be released. They then neglect to take their medication, and the voices, or whatever drives them, return, and they suffer relapses. I am sure the same thing happens in the UK and other nations. Unfortunately, the majority of Police personnel are also untrained in how to deal with such people, and we see this kind of problem far too often.
These officers were ill-prepared to deal with this guy, and should have been able to fall back and call in more appropriate resources. Instead, they felt driven to bring closure to the situation by any means at their immediate disposal, which meant either the guy surrender, or they subdue him by force.
