Forum: The Outdoors

A place to discuss all of your outdoor activities. Hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and whatever else you do out in the great wilds.

  1. Hiking the Canyons of the West

I visited 5 National Parks this past two weeks: Zion, Bryce, Arches, Monument Valley & The Grand Canyon. I've got blood blisters and sunburned feet to prove that I covered a lot of ground for a fat old man. The scenery was spectacular and the weather perfect.

  2. Portland Zoo Visit

After cleaning the dust out of my camera sensor I needed to test out how well I did in removing every speck. I headed for the Portland Zoo to fire off a number in shots with the intent of making sure all was good to go on my vacation. I enjoyed the familiar walk through the zoo, stopping at my...

  3. Backyard Nature

Have you ever gone fishing along a shoreline, cast your bait a hundred feet off shore as you notice more fisherman in a boat casting ten feet from where you're standing? That's my twist on "The grass is always greener..." story. It proves a point however, why drive to Mt Rushmore to get out to...

  4. Oregon's Columbia River Gorge

In my travels in Oregon & Washington nothing is more dramatic than driving the high river roads that run along the Columbia River Gorge. Highway 30 on the Oregon side and Highway 14 on the Washington side present scenic overlooks that take your breath away. The high country is primitive and...

  5. Hiking to Waterfalls

Since retiring I realize one of my important jobs is staying healthy. I need to get out and get regular exercise to stay active. Hiking to remote locations ties nicely to my main hobby, photography. Oregon is an outdoors goldmine with its diverse number of micro-climates and terrain. Withing a 100...

  6. Looking for advice on killing yellow jackets . . .

Well for the past 4 weeks I have been battling "yellow jackets" that made a nest "behind" the wood trim molding around my front door entry way. I sprayed the area over & over again for the last 3 weeks, using up "3" cans of wasp/yellow jacket spray, to no avail! A week ago, I even bought a yellow...

  7. Would you be fishing with alligators being close?

Not sure if any of you guys ever have fished at nights with alligators being close. Now, I'm living in SE Texas and I'm very aware of we do have alligators around here and I have seen them before and we never had seen them so close to get an uncomfortable feeling. But last weekend we were fishing...

  8. A beautiful horseback ride

I try to get out and do it a few times a year... this was one of those exceptional days. The video is a little shaky since it's from horseback, but it's short so you won't get too queasy. The river was roaring like mad with spring run-off, unfortunately there was too much wind to hear it: ...

  9. Off to Devon!

Train to Totnes, steam train to Kingswear, ferry across the Dart to Dartmouth (where I plan to stay the night), then walk round to Salcombe via Start Point to see brother and both sisters. Elder sister is over from NZ, which is the occasion for the get together. The weather forecast has just...

  10. Repelling Snakes

My niece is having trouble with snakes being in the yard and on the porch. Does anyone know of anything that actually works and repels them? She doesn't have a lot of junk in her yard or anything we can think of to attract them. Help!

  13. Calling all Hunters!

I've had a pretty good season of quail hunting so far, I have been out 6 times and got skunked twice while I figured out how to hunt them here in CA. Mountain Quail are a very difficult bird to track, trail and kill but a tasty bird and worth the effort. I have collect up 14 so far. One evening...
