Question Red sea, dead sea? Help please

I want...no...need a holiday. I want to refresh my diving skills, relax and get a tan. <sigh> Remember those? I have a mate who's just come back from Egypt and said that the Red Sea was amazing. I'm doing my research but multiple choice was never my strong point and I am being inundated with it. And "guided experiences". I'm not sure I want to know what that involves, thank you!

Has anyone been? Are there any recommendations? Any other suggestions? Consider the criteria :
    - non-tourist. By that I mean no hotel complexes or "entertainment for all the family". Just the adverts for Butlins make me nauseous. Club Reps...if I see one I may be forced to strangle him with my bikini - modesty be damned.
    - Nile trip, Pyramids, Valley of the Kings, etc, etc = good. Local culture = good. Sinai Oases = good. All negotiable. Diving = set in stone.

Any post-pubescent trekkers with a hooka or travel agents out there with a lull in their Christmas mania please do let me know what you think. Answers on a post-card...er...<you see what I mean...I need a holiday>

Coolio - ta for that! Is there one particular spot I should be going? Everything seems to be quoting Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh or Taba but the only hotels I'm seeing in those areas are exactly the type I want to avoid.

Well you wouldn't really have much fun diving in the dead sea, would you?

Well...you should of course consider the fact that the "Dead Sea" is called that for a reason - the extremely high salinity of the water prevents any form of aquatic flora or fauna from living there. Obviously, not your ideal sightseeing dive location. Not to mention that the increased density of the water makes for a very difficult swim, let alone a dive.

I have friends who have visited the Red Sea, and every one of them claims it is a beautiful place. I say go for it. One caveat, however: The currents of the sea can be very tricky; if you go diving, be sure to get the input of locals of where safe locations to dive are.

    Bon Voyage!
