A quick update on this from a US charity who appear to be doing a great job of helping the homeless :- https://startsleeping.org/homeless-sleep/ From their figures the homeless count in the US is slowly dropping, down by a hundred thousand in the past ten years, and that the rough sleeper count is approximately half the total homeless. Also included is a useful directory of shelters and resources to help the homeless.

By contrast, the increase in the UK rough sleeper figure over the duration of just this thread is shameful, and entirely a consequence of Conservative party policies enacted under Cameron and May. At the very least there's been a ten-fold increase and it's clearly apparent walking around even small towns these days.

The UK figures, as with all Government statistics, can be misleading. The number of people sleeping rough has more than tripled. That is the number the Government WANT you to see. The figure they DON'T want you to see is far higher, and that is those who are classed as homeless, but living in Temporary Accommodation. That figure, as Spot says, has increased by at least a factor of 10 - more like 15. The primary cause for Homelessness in the UK is that of the all in one Universal Credit - the welfare benefit that is supposed to combine 6 benefits into one. In theory it is a good thing, but the entire implementation of it is so flawed it's ridiculous. It was piloted in a few areas & the problems immediately became elf evident, but rather than fixing the problems, or put it on hold whilst they sorted out the problems they continued to roll it out gradually across the country. The theoretical side of UC is that you only need to fill in a single form. The problem is that because the form covers so many variables there are too many conflicting areas. It is designed to get the claimant used to Monthly payments, so it can take 5 - 10 weeks before getting any money - by which time many Private Landlords will have evicted their tenants for non payment of rent. Then comes the most corrupt part of it on the side of the Government. The theory of UC is that you can still continue to claim whilst you work in order to supplement your income. Not a problem in that, but if you declare as much as 1 hour's work in any fortnightly signing period you are classed as 'In Work". Furthermore, you can have your benefits sanctioned / stopped at the drop of a hat - even for missing an appointment because you were attending a Job Interview. Once you are no longer in receipt of benefits you are also classed as "In Work". There are also the famous "Fit For Work" tests. These are done by an Administrator following a checklist. They are technically called "Health Specialists", but have no Medical training whatsoever. If you have previously been in receipt of an Incapacity Benefit you can summarily have this stopped unless you fit the very limited criteria on the checklist. The 'examination', incidentally, takes about half an hour. There have literally been incidents where people have been deemed "Fit For Work" & have died on their way out. Needless to say, once they have been deemed as "Fit For Work" and are found not to be actively seeking employment (which can be a problem if you're bedbound) once again you get your benefits stopped, and you miraculously become classed as "In Work". Now, if you were to believe Theresa May's rhetoric in Prime Minister's Questions each week you might think that UC is really working, as we have record levels of people who are "In Work". Once you understand what "In Work" means, though, it takes on a totally different, and far more sinister perspective. If you get the chance, watch the film "I, Daniel Blake". It's a low budget film, and the acting isn't really that brilliant, but the detail in it is superb. It is an exact representation of how the system works (or fails to work). The Government condemned it as a work of "Pure Fiction". Yes, of course it's fiction, but it is based on the factual experiences of thousands. Bear in mind that we currently have a Government in power that has caused the UN to send an Independent Special Rapporteur into the infliction of poverty to the most vulnerable in UK society. The report was damning, and even stated that the Government is in denial about how things are. Needless to say, the Government denies this. And this is a Government that feels it is so important to waste its time debating whether or not the Leader of the Opposition mouthed the words "Stupid Woman", as they claim, or "Stupid People", as he says. The whole thing is farcical.
