So why did Obama not turn up with all the other world leaders in paris? Are Americans still sulking over the gulf war or something?

    There is no actual list.

And that is a serious question.
The same suggestion was put forward by one of the panelists on Question Time last week, where it was said that individual papers might be living in fear of terrorist attacks on them & their families, but if all the publishing houses were to ally themselves & give it maximum publicity, the attacks would prove counter productive.

For the avoidance of doubt, should anyone wonder, I am not Charlie. The editorial policy of the magazine was and remains a deliberate waving of a very cheap and distasteful flag by people who should be ashamed of themselves.

On the other hand Pope Francis is entirely wrong when he says desecrating the faith of a believer should be prevented. Every believer is blinkered, every believer is a millstone around the neck of humanity, every believer should be mocked and embarrassed and have his or her ignorance flaunted. Every manifestation of the mythical but unreal God-Out-There should be denounced as cogently as possible for the bogus and dangerous cobblers it is. This doesn't mean I'd ever be so antisocial as to buy or read a copy of Charlie Hebdo, not even in translation.

    Gotcha

I've read similar about Charlie, something I might not wish to soil my fingers with.

I didn't see the quote, but as you represent it, I don't know how in a free society we could prevent people from desecrating the faith of a believer, whatever that means.

I paraphrased for brevity. I think I conveyed the chap's gist:
He said that freedom of speech and expression are fundamental human rights however he added that he believes there should be limits to offending and ridiculing the faiths and beliefs of others.

By way of example, he referred to Alberto Gasparri, who organises his trips and was standing by his side on board the papal plane.

“If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,” Francis said while pretending to throw a punch in his direction.

He added: “It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”

Charlie Hebdo: Pope Francis says if you swear at my mother – or Islam – 'expect a punch'

Is the Pope following Jesus, or does he just like the costume?

"You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.' 39"But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. Matthew, 5:39

    Luke, 6:29
"But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29"Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.…"

If the Pope doesn't understand the message of Jesus, after I insult his mother (the pope's) I shall remind him before he throws his first punch.

Stupider & Stupider goes this crazy violent world.
