Calling all stranglers fans

Post by Oscar Namechange »

Is there any Stranglers fans out there that i can tempt on to our forum?

Any of you attend gigs on the just finished tour?

If so, any thoughts on performance and tracks?

Hugh Cornwall... Paul Roberts.... or Baz Warne? Who takes your title?

Any comments welcome from new members on the greatest British rock band of all time?

For me, they get better as time goes on however, this has to be the best performance i ever saw.

Good to hear. we will discuss more at the meet. I've seen them, oh i can't count any more but my brother added up his ticket stubs once a few years back and it was about 410.

They are still the best. Nothing can touch them for live performance.

What's your fave track Jimbo.

If i had to choose, I'd say 'The Raven'

Look closely Jimbo... You will see yourself in these pics.

This is also my ultimate fave track 'The Raven' sung by Jean Jaques Burnel

Thanks for those Dubs....... Fantastic stuff. Although i must say, i've seen them many mnay times. The sole reason of my acquiring a cinema surround system was purly for my Stranglers vids and dvd's. Much to Mr Oscar's annoyance! Although he became a fan of Paul Roberts who took over from Hugh Cornwell in later years.

The first...... 'Toiler on the Sea'. Has to be one of the most underestimated greats of all time. Certainly a brilliant example of J'J Burnel's awesome bass guitar. I would have to say this track is even better live. I would rate this as my 4th all time Stranglers track.

2Nd......... Nice N Sleezy. I was at

Battersea Park when they brought the strippers on to this...... hilarious. It was actually written about the sleezy going's on of the Amsterdam Hells Angels that used to protect The Stranglers at gigs.

3Rd.....Get a grip (on yourself). Many think 'Peaches' was the first ever Stranglers Single but it was 'Grip' That clip is from one of their very first performances at 'The Hope and Anchor Pub' in London. J'J. was so terrifying back then.

Any more would be welcome.

What's your favourite Dubs??

By the way, i still wear my original 1970's Stranglers knee high Doc Martin boots. You can't buy them like that any one. Just like J.J.'s :-4:-4:-4

I have idolised this band for 31 years and they are still going. I'm going to try to find the pics of me with them and up load them on here.

My brother and i used to hitch hike all over Europe to see them in the 70's and 80's. Oh happy days. It takes me right back looking at all the old clips. Of course they are older now but then so am i :wah:

So your aliens fly round the room too do they?? I'm fed up with mine doing that, they've had three light fittings down already. It's just getting light so i'm making them some sandwiches for their journey home. :yh_rotfl

Thanks Kathy. Did you really watch all of them???

They had a fearsome reputation in the 70's and 80's. Two of them spent time in prison, one for inciting a riot. he got 18 months in France. A huge shame because they're notoriety outweighed their musical genius in the press.

I absolutely adore them and have spent 31 years going to see them with my brother. A huge part of my life spent on them (and hotel bills).

I also still scour e bay for rare tracks and memorabelia.

Hi Ludwig van B, first of all, welcome to Forum garden. We have many catagory's to browse through including the music section where you can post your own choice of vids.

Great to find a true Stranglers fan.

I suppose it all started for me with 'Rattus Norvegus'. 'Down in the Sewer' just blew me away. It was just something that i'd never heard in my life before. All my pals were listening to 'Donny osmond' Or 'The Bay City Rollers' Yuk.

Then the next revelation took place in my life... that was the day i first laid eyes on 'Jean jaques Burnel' and 'Hugh Cornwell'. That was it, the change of my life.

Around 78, when i was 20, we got to hear of a gig in Battersea park and went along. That's when they brought the famous strippers on.

The band first came together in Guildford in 1974 with Jet and Hugh before recruiting guitarist turned bassist Jean Jacques

That was my first gig. What i saw that day was four individual men and i saw 'Jet Black', The greatest drums player ever. I saw 'Dave Greenfield', The most outstanding haunting keyboard player i'd ever heard. I saw 'Hugh Cornwell, the sharpest singer and brilliant electric guitarist and then i saw 'Jean jaques', the one who made me nearly pass out at the mere sight of him, added with the greatest bass guitarist in history and the greatest stage presence in history.

Many many gigs followed, many into Europe and they just got better.

Many outragous storie's went with those adventures, maybe i should write the book 'A Fan's Journey'?

The last time i saw them was a few weeks ago at Bristol.

Before i go into my 31 years of idolising what is the greatest British rock band of all time, tell me about some of your experiences and favourite tracks.

Write me your fave top ten numbers. Let's see if great minds think alike.

Good to have you here, hope you stick around.... In fact, i am always 'Hanging Around' :-6

Hi Oscar

thanks for replying

it's pretty hard giving a top 10 of stranglers tracks when there are so many to choose from but i think i should give it a go

1) sewer (just an awesome track which says everything about them)

2) something better change ( full of energy and menace)

3) grip ( mesmerising, and started it all off)

4) toiler ( so technical)

5) the raven ( a brilliant piece of music, setting out their stall,so to speak)

6) i feel like a wog (great tune with some contraverial lyrics at that time )

7) peaches (one of the most famous)

8) Baroque Bordello (typically weird)

9) tank ( an epic)

10) burning up time (great bass line)

Your first gig was at Battersea.wow. What do you remember of that day, it must have been amazing , did you live in London at that time?, have you ever met the band? do you know other huge strangler fans like you (see, i told you i was an anorak/hahah
