+- Bizarre Facts About the Original Version of Snow White -+

The Grimm fairy tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is

much different from the Disney version. Here are some

examples of how the tale was different:

The Queen doesn't ask for Snow White's heart - she wants the

princess's lungs and liver. When the hunter brings her the

boar's innards, the Queen - thinking they're Snow White's -

has them boiled in salt and eats them.

In the original story, the Queen tries to kill Snow White

three times. The first two attempts fail. Since the Queen

uses the same disguise all three times, we have to assume

Snow White is a little short in the brains department.

The dwarfs - who don't have cute names - do put Snow White

in a glass coffin. But the Prince doesn't wake her with a

kiss. In fact, kissing her never enters his mind. He just

thinks she's pretty (albeit dead), and wants to keep her

around his castle.

On the way back to the castle, servants carrying the casket

trip and drop it. This dislodges the poison apple from Snow

White's throat and she's revived.

In this tale, the Queen makes it back to her castle after

apparently killing Snow White. A little later, she's

invited to a wedding. The wedding, it turns out, is Snow

White's. When the Queen arrives, Snow and the Prince have

a pair of red-hot iron shoes waiting in the fireplace. The

Queen is forced to wear the shoes and dance until she drops

dead.

In the real story of the Little Mermaid she dies, of a broken heart. It is very sad to read Anderson's real story about it. My daughters did when they were young, and they cried. It wasn't Ariel, the pretty one dancing under the sea in the Disney movie.

Does anyone remember the film, Dr Zhivago, from back in the 60's? I remember an early scene, when Omar Shariff's character was a child and his mother died. I have a strong recollection of her being carried in a glass coffin.

And in the original story of Cinderella, the ugly sisters chopped off their toes and heels to make the slipper fit!

You're right. All of the stories had a moral attached, it's just Disney who rewrote them to make them more palatable and gave them the nice fluffy endings!

Which is great for our generation, but kids today are game-fanatics and blood thirsty little monsters! So someone should rewrite them again with alien/predator style endings and lots of gore and dripping blood, so they can be enjoyed (!) all over again by the modern generation! :wah:

Although it was probably not your intention, you have just made me laugh out loud Marie, I read with interest your post about Snow White, and sat here imagining Walt Disney replicating the Grimm Fairy Tale. I could just imagine the look of horror on childrens faces as the story unfolds and they fearfully hide behind the sofa. (titter) :lips: Mind you todays youth are used to the now infamous Dr Hannibal Lecter and his cannibalistic urges... :D

In a way, it might be good to teach children that "life" doesn't always have a "happily ever after" ending, it may even serve to do them good, but I guess life is hard enough and through time we all learn that life aint always a bed of roses, so hooray for Walt Disney's version (lol) :wah:

Snow White premiered on December 21, 1937, and provided a benchmark for all "Disney" films that followed, the fact that this story is still a firm favourite for young & old shows how much we all love a Happy Ending no matter how much of a cynic is inside us.

Marie, I thank you again for raising a smile out of me but also for the interesting facts that you provided, I wish there were more posts like this.
