Ulster Christmas Rhymers

Ulster's Christmas Ryhmers were local folk from Northern Ireland. Every December they went from house to house,performing short plays and collecting money for charity.

The Old Ulster custom was introduced by English settlers in the early 17th century. It is believed the plays are variations of the Old English Morris Dancers. The Ryhmers wore masks and false beards. Some blackeded their faces and stuffed straw into their pockets, sleeves and waists.

Their most popular play was St George and the Turkish Infidel. Years ago, many Ulster farm house had a latch door, so any visitor could walk in.
