Front page of the Sun today (I know it's the Sun, but it's still what a lot of people read)

SUN CAMPAIGN

So, is this really

the most OFFENSIVE

image in Britain?

(see link for picture, it the nativity)

The Sun

Cherished ... classic Nativity scene

By HARRY MACADAM

This is the Nativity scene cherished by millions of Britons at Christmas.

Yet politically correct jobsworths call it “offensive” and are banning it in their drive to obliterate festive traditions.

The Sun is today launching a campaign to save Christmas — by turning back the tide of “politically correct” meddling that threatens to destroy it.

Festive traditions are facing gradual extinction thanks to barmy bureaucrats who WRONGLY believe they are offensive to followers of religions other than Christianity.

The list of endangered customs is growing by the day. In many offices, factories, schools and tourist attractions across Britain:

NATIVITY scenes and the words Merry Christmas are being erased from greetings cards.

DECORATIONS such as tinsel and baubles can no longer be put up.

STAFF are banned from enjoying Christmas lunch or parties, and

CAROL services cannot be advertised.

Stores are closing Santa’s grottos. And even Tony Blair has jumped on the bandwagon.

One of the cards being sent out this year by the PM — a committed Christian — omits the C-word and just says: “Best wishes for the New Year.”

Last night The Sun’s crusade was backed by a string of high-profile politicians and community leaders led by Tory chief Michael Howard.

He spoke for millions when he said:

It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is or what religion you are.

We’re all British. And Christmas is a British tradition.

No one has to celebrate Christmas if they don’t want to. But please don’t stop the rest of us enjoying the celebrations.

I’m proud to be British and proud to celebrate Christmas.”

Other religious groups happily celebrate festivals such as the Hindu and Sikh Diwali, the Jewish Hanukkah and the Muslim Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

And ironically the threat to Christmas is NOT coming from them, but from ignorant jobsworths working for government departments, councils and charities.

Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Council for Racial Equality, said:

It’s not offensive to minority communities to celebrate the festival of Christmas. Nor is it racially exclusive.

A ban on Christmas isn’t just silly to those who profess to be Christians. Most people of other faiths are bemused that we should even question it.

Some of the people who want to ban Christmas like to pose as caring liberals, anxious about the feelings of, say, Muslims.

But they usually forget to ask minority communities what they want. This is truly repressive.

A spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said: “There is nothing offensive to our religion about Christmas or celebrations such as carols or the Nativity scene.”

But meanwhile the assault thunders on. The taxpayer-funded Eden Project in Cornwall will not allow any mention of Christmas. The eco-friendly tourist attraction has renamed it “A Time Of Gifts”.

This week London’s Madame Tussauds waxworks came under fire for a Nativity scene featuring a celebrity line-up led by Posh and Becks.

It is supposed to be fun. But for some people, fun is a dirty word.

Wow. I think it is very dangerous to throw out tradition and heritage. This is happening more and more due to the demands of the minority.

What are we teaching our children? Whitewashing our cultural heritage with politically correct stories and experiences will leave you with what?

Every year since I can remember we here in the San Diego, Ca area have a wonderful celebration of Christmas at our beautiful Balboa Park. It has always been called, 'Christmas At The Prado" Now they call it 'December Nights"

I could vomit!

Easter Vacation for the schools is now called "Spring Vacation" I could vomit again.

Christmas Vacation is called "Winter Vacation". I can't vomit anymore. My stomach's empty!

We have a gorgeous huge Cross on top of our biggest mountain here in La Jolla.

It has alway's been a memorial for our servicemen. Now they have to sell the property it is on because they do not believe anymore that any Christian symbol has anything to do with the Military! BAH HUMBUG!

:( Do ya think that maybe the insatiable quest for tolerance and diversity, might actually be intolerance and repression ?

That perhaps the demagogs for destruction of tradition are actually the new puritans ?

Have the witch trials restarted ?

Are ACLU lawyers becoming the new inquisitors ?

[apologies to our UK and Canadian friends for referencing American history, please berate me for my insensativity]

Is it time for the long suffering great silent majority to form a truly diverse international coalition to expose these pretenders ? :-5

letha wrote: We had most of that too you know, witch trails here were amazing in numbers, but what are ACLU lawyers :confused:American Civil Liberties Union has evolved from a protector of constitutional freedoms to a virulent anti christian, anti tradition advocacy.

Example's of recent court actions: delete "one nation under god " from plege of allegiance, delete "in god we trust" from US coins, removal of the word "god" from all public places, forcing removal of Nativity scenes from town squares, trying to force removal of small crosses from the official seals of california towns

They are currently targeting the boy scouts because of their policy of prohibiting openly gay scout leaders, they could'nt force policy change so are now trying to deny the scouts access to all public facilities, and support from any public agency [like the US military, a long time sponser and partner with programs like Sea Scouts etc.] Their current agenda includes prohibition of the word "christmas", of christmas trees, of christmas decorations from all government offices, documents, and properties.

Saved the best for last, they now are trying to prohibit any christmas display on private property that can be seen by the public. Meaning that if your Christmas tree can be seen through your window, they want to sue you.

Oh BTW, they ADVOCATE for the rights of porn shop owners. :-5

Pardon my ignorance, just picked up on the thread & tried to understand it, but as usual most of it went over my head.

I'd have thought that surely the most offensive image in Britain was a former spice girl & her footballer husband being Mary & Joseph & Bush & Blair being two of the wise men in Madam Tussauds wax museum!!!! :-2

Australia wants Independence from UK. Most asking for this in Australia are Irish Republicans.

And I don't like that idea of The Republic of England, doesn't sound right :wah:

Australia *is* independent. Didn't you know this, is your first sentence above mis-worded, or are you trolling (sh i t kicking) ?

There was a referendum in 1999 - a proposal that Australia become a republic was defeated. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-p ... 507293.stm

"Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy with the Queen of the United Kingdom the official Head of State. The Governor General, usually an Australian, represents the Queen in Australia; in effect, the Head of State of Australia. The Prime Minister of Australia nominates the Governor General of Australia, and the Queen ratifies the nomination."

I am not a child anymore but I love christmas. If you get goodwill at least once a year it's a start.

Christ was not even born on Christmas day so you have definitive proof ? fantastic I always wanted to find out what lies behind the Christian myths, what day exactly was it, oh and can you chuck in the year while you are about it.

To those who decry Christmas I say Bah Humbug!

Incidentally are you the same Kissed angel who is thaking someone for the post regarding Ramadan, so this religious celebration is OK but Christmas is not?

Fortunately our politicians even teflon Tony has no input into the religion of this country although I am sure he would assure us that God was on his side.

personally i've always loved christmas and would be sad to let it go.

i think instead of letting go of our own traditions we should recognise some of the ones that are being imported into our country such as the festival of light. this way we are truly respecting and accepting diversity!

Well..I vowed this year to wish people a Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays... soo.. one day at work...

I did and one person was Jewish.. so I responded with Happy Hannakuh...

Guess what..

Can you say reprimand.. and having to apologize for being insensitive..

so..

next year I am doing the same thing.....

and if it happens again.. I am going to invoke my right of freedom of speech to combat this insensitive, politically correct crap that is invading society...

Surely the most offensive image in Britain was George Galloway pretending to be a cat and lapping pretend milk from Rula Lenska's hands?
