Biometricts ID's

Post by capt_buzzard »

Privacy Issues were raised further as the Police IT Organisation (PITO) said it would install new biometric identifcation technology to fight crime. PITO said the new system IDENT 1, would be used for mobile fingerprint and palm print checking, facial imaging and video identification, it will replace the National Automated Fingerprint Indentification System (NAFIS) that has been used in England,Wales and Scotland since 1991.

This holds records on six million people, However, the small print of the Government's national ID cards bill states that police invistigating crimes will also have access to the national ID card database if they are unable to find matches. Ross Anderson, Professor of Security Engineering at Cambridge University said that given the current state of technology, matching fingerprints to a database the size of the UK population would lead to a 'serious risk of false matches'.
