Fascism on the rise in spain - again

Catalan independence referendum: Hundreds injured by Spanish riot police as voters go to polls | The Independent

The ghost of franco still haunts spain. Not all catalans wanted independence the spanish government have probably changed their minds. Wonder if the tories will try brute force when we have a second referendum in scotland.

I find such scenes to be completely unbelievable in modern day Europe.

How can the government think that treating their citizens in this way will be affective in stopping the call for independence ?

It's the authoritarian mindset - a sense of entitlement to rule and anyone questioning has no right to do so. Just read the daily mail and some of the stuff coming from the brexiteers a lot of centres round you should just accept things and do what you are told changing your mind or objecting is somehow unpatriotic. The tories are completely self obsessed with less than a third of the electorate voting for them you have to be able to suspend reason to believe that gives you the right to do as you wish.

Without the successful con job that was the brexit vote (they are doing this based on about 1/4 of the electorate - even the tories haven't sunk that low) I don't think the Catalan issue would ever have got to this point. It's been bubbling along as a movement for decades without getting to this point - until the example of a successful secessionist movement based on 25% of the vote made ANY turnout and a majority of one justifiable grounds for secession.

Brexiters will of course say this is why we should be leaving Europe, ignoring that they share responsibility for it. Our voice is now irrelevant and the EU's is much weaker without us and with the whole brexit situation less able to respond constructively.

Brexiters: our very own collection of Mosleyites and their supporters - though I doubt Mosley would have run away to the USA if he'd won, the way Farage did.

(I'm now getting used to being called a traitor and regard it as a way of identifying the more hopelessly deluded or extreme brexiters, usually identifiable as the loudest bore in the pub, going by the arguments)

It has been an issue for decades perhaps it is that the catalans have fallen for the illusion of democracy getting rid of franco and restoring the monarchy gave them. The fascists in our country are warning of the dangers of socialism and jeremy corbyn for no better reason than it gives them an excuse to destroy the socialist welfare state and the NHS and the idiot brexiteers will go along with them not having the brainds to understand that they have to wait for their operations because of a systematic insidious of the NHS by underfunding and pfi contracts that are crippling it to the benefit of private construction companies. New labout have a lot to answer for perhaps more so than the tories.

Now the Spanish are imposing direct rule and acting in a thoroughly dictatorial way. All they need is a few martyrs and they'll have their own terrorism issue. Again.

What a strange phenomenon in these days of multinationals with massive migration and international travel that all the minority factions are demanding self determination.

From all the iron curtain countries to the Basques Catalans Scots Welsh Irish (soon) Cornish. Think there was talk about several American states wanting autonomy.
