want to strike the fear into deer

Post by Tombstone »

Hi Enuf,

Here's a list of handy ways to keep deer away from your area or garden.

1. To spread on the ground: Try predator feces or urine. A good one is coyote urine - which you can buy at hunting stores.

2. Get a dog. (Barking will keep them away.)

3. Do what my grandfather did: Hang bright tin cans from the trees or bags of soap.

4. Sometimes garden chimes will keep them away. (noise.)

i seem to recall hearing years ago that plain old bone meal, the stuff you can get in a sack at the garden supply store, is pretty effective. the scent of animal bones is not something deer tend to stay around, for fear theirs will be the next bones in the pile...

Hey Enuf..

If you want to try the soap trick it is Irish Spring soap. Crush it up alittle and hang it in nylons around the garden. I tried this a couple years ago and it seemed to work. Another trick I have heard of is you going out and urinating around the garden.. I have not tried this one.. soooooo.. I cannot vouch for its effectiveness.. .... but good luck with the over grown rodents.. of course you could always wait for deer season and fill the freezer.. yum......have a great day...

Is an electric fence acceptable? I mean the agricultural kind, a single strand

on posts, connected to a pulse generator. If you've a reasonably static local

population, after a while you won't need it on all the time. You can run these

off a solar charger/battery:

Instead, http://wirelessdeerfence.com/wdf/index.html - though I'm not sure

how effective it might be.

There're all sorts of repellent chemicals that can be sprayed onto plants, a

quick Google for "deer repellent" will find them.

Gives some interesting information.

Umm.. the electric fence is not an option..I have seen deer jump over an 8 foot fence.. as far as repellents.. some do work but the majority don't. Best way to control them is hunting... especially in areas where the natural predators have been basically eliminated..

They won't normally jump, though, unless they're being chased... or are your

deer different from ours? I guess you could generate that effect by using mines

in conjunction with a fence..... yes, shooting them is a good way of controlling

them - if you've a use/market for the carcass it's even better. From the PDF

I psoted, it seems the main problem with repellents is expense.

well. the land mines add an interesting twist to the solution. Can't say as you can buy those at the local corner store though... course it would save having to cut it up afterwards.. just pick up the choice pieces..

There's a thought, it would certainly save making a mess in the garage,

but those choice pieces might have an extra-special "gamey" smell to

them.... a quick Google just now shows that it is legal in the 'States

to take deer with bows and arrows... is this really so?

Do these seasons overlap? It seems very odd to me that there are three,

and very surprising that taking deer with bows and arrows is allowed!

Here in Britian, it is not allowed, and there are specifications (minimum bore)

for rifles allowed for taking deer (shotguns are not allowed at all).

What are the seasons, do you know? AFAIR here all stags and bucks except

Roe open on the 1st. of August and close on the 30th. of April; Roe opens

on the 1st. of April and closes on the 31st. of October. Hinds and does open

on the 1st. of November, close the last day of February. The situation is a

little different in Scotland.

Bow Season runs in 2 parts.. 10/2-1-24 and 12/4-12/12. You can take a deer during each session.. but only one buck.. with 3"antlers..

Muzzleloader season is from 12/4-12/14

youth weekend is 11/6-11/7

and regular season runs right after youth season thru thanksgiveing I think. No restrictions on weapons that I can recall and shotguns are legal.

I don't know from experience but I've been told by those who should know that spreading human hair around repels deer.

Why don't you make a very large voodoo deer, hang it with a noose from a tree and hold a gun to its head when the deer are watching.

Might freak them out a bit.

If they are smart deer, you'll find a voodoo you hanging on the other side of the fence within a week. :wah:
