Mitt Romney appointed Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio to Presidential campaign. I think Mitt is going for the conservative core of the Republican party and he will probably get it. I'll say it now. I think Romney will be the Republican's pick. McCain may as well save his money and retire a Senator.

I'd like to see Arpaio for president. I think he'd clean up a lot of problems. I really like that guy, what I know of him anyway.

If we are basing our future president on what they have done for us, we are in a serious pickle- I think she would be a strong, grounded, person to shake up the office a little.

She has never been elected to anything before. She hasn't really accomplished anything in her present appointed position. What would she shake up? What skill has she demonstrated that makes you think she could shake things up? Being strong and grounded is good but it doesn't mean she could lead.

Many of our presidents have been governors with a track record like Romney.

If it's that she is female and black... she can ride that for about the first five days in office.

I'm sorry, I think she is quite a strong woman to back up someone so hated in office! Maybe that doesnt make her a good canidate, but it would still be different! And manny of our mayors are cheats and liars, heck, some of our old presidents are cheats and liars! I dont care if she is black, red, women, whatever- as long as she is the RIGHT person for the job!

Clint, what is your opinion on Obama??

I think he's smart like Condi. I think he comes across very well like Condi. I also think he lacks the background and accomplishments to go up against someone like Romney or someone in his own party who has acutally governed before. He is going to have a huge problem with his name and I don't think he will get very far.

Could be...I haven't read anything that make me think so. A remark here or there taken out of context isn't enough to make me call him racist. His name could cause people to think he is and it does cause doubt about who he is.

Race and gender will only get a President to their first decision in office. When Congress won't move on something the President is trying to get through it won't help to remind them of race or gender...it might help to remind them of your party affiliation if it happens to be in power though.

This race and gender fixation could cost us our country.

I don't think that makes one racist at all, myself. I'm white and I also think it's time to have a non-white person in office. I think it's past time for a woman to be president but I don't think that's sexist of me. I would still vote for who I thought was the best choice, rather than automatically voting in a woman or someone of color just because I could. :)

Clint, you bet- the ACLU would be all over Arpaio running! I think he could give them a run for their money though. :D

He's still in there but once the heat gets turned up and the things he did when he was Mayor start coming out, I don't think he'll make the long haul. He wouldn't be considered at all if he hadn't had such a good showing on 9-11. Leading in the middle of clear and present danger is totally different than the day to day business of being President. I think he would lose big time against Bill Richardson who Obama and Hillary will both have a real tough time with. I expect to see Richardson come out on top after the other Democrats spill their blood in the mud.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio - The truth about America's Toughest Sheriff

Top Ten Reasons to RECALL Joe Arpaio

1: With Arpaio, real law enforcement takes a backseat to publicity stunts. 6: The self proclaimed “Toughest Sheriff in America ” is too fearful to debate other candidates.

2: He lives in a fantasy world of self-importance. 7: Arpaio routinely abuses his authority for personal, political, and vindictive reasons.

3: Millions of tax dollars have been wasted on lawsuits 8: Many community leaders and concerned organizations have looked beyond the smokescreen to see the corruption and incompetence of the Arpaio administration.

4: He is responsible for a critical and dangerous shortage of personnel in both in the jails and patrol. 9: Sheriff Joe Arpaio has deceived, misinformed and outright lied to the public!

5: Hundreds of current sheriff's office employees, represented by a number of employee organizations, have expressed a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Arpaio. 10: Arpaio's self-serving and ego-driven actions have severely damaged relations between the sheriff's office and other government organizations.

Sheriff Joe aficionados lined up outside Play It Again Sports at 34th Street and Thomas Road, Phoenix to get their autographed bobble head doll. 11-01.

Arpaio, Sheriff Joe

(Joseph M. Arpaio, 1932- ) Maricopa County Sheriff.

Lives in Fountain Hills

Joseph Arpaio was elected sheriff of Maricopa County in 1992.

Sheriff Joe, out of uniform for the unofficial appearance, signs his bobble head look-alike. 11-01

Things haven't been the same in the county jail since. A champion of self promotion, the sheriff quickly became known as as

The Sheriff Joe bobble head doll.

"America's toughest sheriff."

The crowning achievement of the publicity machine came at the close of 2001. Imagine 5,000 Sheriff Joe look-alikes, heads a bobbing on mantles all across the valley. On December 15, the official Sheriff Joe Arpaio bobble head doll went on sale. The sheriff accommodated the throngs of doll collectors and autographed the purchases.

Some highlights of Sheriff Joe's tenure:

1993: On August 6, Sheriff Joe bans Playboy and other "sexually explicit materials" from the jails.

1993: Sheriff Joe places 1,200 men in Korean War surplus Army tents to save money and relieve jail overcrowding.

1995: To symbolize that he will always be room for more criminals, Sheriff Joe has a "vacancy" sign installed at the Maricopa County tent-city jail. When the sign is destroyed in a riot in November of the following year, the sheriff has a new sign installed.

1995: Tents to hold 200 women prisoners are installed.

1995: Pretrial detainee Jonathan D. Mauro sues the sheriff because he can't have his Playboy magazine.

1996: World's first female chain gang is instituted at Estrella Jail on September 19.

1996: Sheriff Joe appears nationally on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect comedy/satire show, then on the Comedy Channel.

Sheriff Joe's female chain gang clean up the Warner-Elliott Loup in Ahwatukee. 7-03

1996: Sheriff Joe personally deputizes con man David Pecard. It soon appears that something is amiss when the new deputy promises to shorten a female inmate's sentence then fondles her in an empty office. Pecard is charged on 12 felony counts and faces a court-martial for deserting the United States army seven times under different identities.

1997: Sheriff Joe makes his second appearance on Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect, but this time to a larger audience since the show has moved to ABC.

1997: U.S. Justice Department sues Sheriff Joe alleging excessive use of force by guards. The sheriff settles the suit by promising to stop hog-tying inmates.

1998: Room for incarcerated teens are added in what Sheriff Joe calls his "pup tents."

1998: America's first full-time jail high school is instituted, with 30 of the jail's 250 teenage inmates attending.

1999: The U.S. Supreme Court sides with Sheriff Joe, saying that he can ban Playboy and other "sexually explicit materials" from the jail.

2001: Following the 9-11 terrorist attack, Sheriff Joe orders American flags painted in 2,000 cells. As of July, 2002, 151 inmates had been punished for defacing them.

2001 - December 15: Sheriff Joe bobble head dolls go on sale, just in time for the Christmas rush.

2004 - July 1 to 11: Country singer and longtime Phoenix resident Glenn Campbell serves 10 days in Sheriff Joe's jail...sort of. Campbell received national attention when he was arrested for DUI on November 24, 2003 after causing a minor traffic accident and leaving the scene. He had a 0.20 blood-alcohol level when he was arrested, far above Arizona's legal limit of 0.08. The Phoenix New Times reported that rather than placing Campbell behind bars or in tent city, Sheriff Joe put him up in the Mesa Hilton for the period of his sentence. Before his release, Campbell gave a free 30 minute concert for about 1,000 inmates at Joe's tent city jail.

2004 - July: Maricopa County prosecutors announce that they will not prosecute 60 suspected prostitutes and their tricks arrested by some 400 sheriff's deputies in a 2 month sting operation in late 2003. The problem with the arrests was that the undercover deputies removed their clothing and engage in sex acts on videotape. An expert on the subject of prostitution arrests explained that if the officers that go that far to get the arrest, they have engaged in prostitution and have themselves committed a crime. TV stations could not wait to get the videos on the evening news.

On a happier occasion Sheriff Joe's SWAT tank escorted Diamondback players in the parade celebrating their 2001 World Series victory over the New York Yankees. 11-01

2004 - July 23: In executing a misdemeanor arrest warrant on 26 year old Eric Kush for failure to appear in Tempe Traffic Court, Sheriff Arpaio's SWAT team burned down a $250,000 home and crushed a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage with their SWAT tank. The Sheriff's SWAT team interrupted a quiet summer morning in the gated Fairway Hills community in the Ahwatukee Foothills when they surrounded the rented house in the 16800 block of South Cyan Court which Kush shared with three other residents. The Sheriff's arsenal included a SWAT tank which prior to that occasion had received its heaviest use promoting the department in valley parades. Shortly after noon, the SWAT team entered the home and escorted a young woman and a child from the property, but Kush barricaded himself on the second floor. Deputies launched gas canisters filling the home with a white gas, but Kush remained in hiding. As the white gas turned to black smoke deputies discovered that the second floor was on fire. They warned Kush who then surrendered as the home was engulfed in flames. Fearing that their armed SWAT tank might become a casualty of the fire, deputies moved the vehicle to safety, parking it on an incline. Unfortunately, the tank's electric brakes disengaged when the engine was turned off allowing it to roll into and almost over the much smaller Mitsubishi Mirage. The Mirage was crushed. The $250,000 home was declared a total loss. Kush posted a $1,000 bond and was released from jail the next day.:wah:

Sheriff Joe”Boss” Arpaio warns journalist’s “free speech” has limits

This post was written by psburton on 30 October, 2006 (19:43) | All News, Government News, Blogosphere News, Civil Rights, Arizona News

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s decided to put journalists on notice that “freedom of speech” has its limits in his county. He ordered his tax paid attorney to send a letter to the West Valley View newspaper threatening legal consequences over a head line that the sheriff disliked. The headline read: “Sheriff as dangerous as a child predator.”

“It was meant to be harsh,” said Jim Painter, the managing editor but one wonder’s how it could be viewed as civil or criminally actionable.

The paper ran an opinion column saying Arpaio was endangering the Avondale community by not telling the paper about a pair of attempted child kidnappings.

You see for more than a year, the sheriff has complained the paper, offers unflattering coverage. Arpaio went so far as to restrict the West ValleyView’s access to critical information and press releases.

The paper took the sheriff to court, and a judge ruled that Arpaio needed to provide equal information and press releases to the newspaper. The sheriff’s office e-mails news outlets “breaking” or critical informational press releases and alerts with the single exception of the west valley news.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman claimed the news releases on the attempted abductions were at headquarters for all to look at. But the West Valley View’s news editor wrote a column criticizing the sheriff for failing to alert the newspaper to the incidents. The paper ran the provocative headline on the Oct. 3 Opinions page

Arpaio then had his county-appointed attorney, Dennis Wilenchik, go to work. Wilenchik, charges taxpayers $185 an hour for his time writing letters on behalf of the sheriff. Wilenchik’s Oct. 24 letter demanded the paper retract the child-predator comparison and “publish the truth” about Arpaio or else, Wilenchik warned that the headline was “malicious, dangerous behavior,”

It will be remembered the “BOSS” as the sheriff is more commonly known recently made headlines for running the only Jail system in the United States considered so corrupt and inhumanly dangerous several member nations of the E.U have chosen not to honor extradition agreements with maricopa county.

McCain is a fellow Vietnam Veteran and a POW to boot. I hold him in high regard but I wouldn't vote for him for President. He doesn't have experience governing and he seems to say whatever will get him the most approval at the time. I don't know why he doesn't announce as a Democrat because he seems more like a Democrat than a Republican to me. This country owes him a lot but the Presidency is not an appropriate gift.

I think Romney will end up with the nomination. I'm not in his cheering section but I think once he gets some exposure he will rise to the top.

It would be nice if there was someone to get excited about.

I dont see anything resembling strength on the Republican side.

Not much better in the other arena but Im getting a whiff of sincerity from Obama.

You know, strong compared to Thompson.

Sincerity is something a leader should have but it doesn't make a leader.

Speaking of leaders, has anybody seen one lately?
